Good point, I suspect I could confirm which one it is by disconnecting it. If I disconnect the wrong one, I would generate different CE codes, right? They are still prone to failure but not as dramatic at a preset age as the original early E36 radiators. I'm thinking the BIG THREE are: water pump; T-Stat, and radiator; then T-stat housing, primary hoses, coolant tank, and then secondary hoses. I think JimM of the PSR BMWCCA fame just changed his MCoupe radiator @ 50+K. In my 95 M3 I replaced this stuff (as well as belts and hoses) at 60k miles, which was good because my water pump was starting to go. I just bought a 2000 M Coupe; I know the water pump material should be fine (either metal or the new composite, not the old plastic impeller like on the 95 M3), but of course the bearings can go. And what of the thermostat housing? Is the radiator neck still prone to fail in the same way as on M3s? Thanks! - reid > I had done the usual radiator, radiator hoses, thermostat, thermostat > housing, serpentine belts, and water pump at 6 years (around 60K > miles) on my 1996 M3.

And what '96 and later front control arm bushings have offset to them? I think you are mixed up, the '95 bushings are offset, the '96+ are centered. > IIRC, the offset bushing increases the caster - does anyone > know the proper orientation of the offset for when they're pressed into the carrier. Logic seem > to make me think that they'd mount with the hole towards the bottom of the carrier, lowering the > back of the control arm, but I thought I'd double check since the Bently doesn't mention it. Umm, no, to gain caster (and dynamic camber), you need the back of the control arm to move to the outside of the car (pivoting at the subframe with the control arm moving forward out where the kingpin connects) pushing the wheel forward in the wheel well. Therefore, the bushing is oriented so that the hole is towards the outside of the car (there are marks on the bushing holder). Regards, Rich

UUC sold it new for $150 and production was VERY limited http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/html_product/BMW_knobs/RKSM2.jpg If you pull hard on this knob it will come off easier then a stock knob but I'm sure that could be fixed by someone with the right know how (read adhesive) $65 Really you should trade me (either full or partial) for some Schroth quick fit harnesses, a Carbon Fiber Hood or Interior Pieces or something else cool though for my car as we'd both get more benefit that way. Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 19:32:19 -0500 From: "Robert Exconde - 99e36m3" <99e36m3@Exconde.com> Subject: Dipping RPM In the last month my car has been acting weird. When I put the clutch in as I am coming into a stop and I'm in 'N' the tach often drops below 500 then sometimes hoevers between 500-600. When it is in this state the oil light goes off and flickers as the revs bob up and down in that range. It has oil as I changed it last month and checked it yesterday. Any suggestoions as to what this may be or what I could do to resolve it? Other that the above stated problem car is running great Robert 99M3 126K miles

#9. Power Steering Problem - from Bill Steele
Top
Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 08:39:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Bill Steele <autoxcrazy@yahoo.com> Subject: Power Steering Problem Last night while driving home I heard an odd noise coming from my 99 M3 (75k miles) -- especially when turning at slow speed. When I got to my driveway I noticed a sort of jerky or surging feeling in the steering. It was late so I did not investigate. I've remember seeing the posts from Chester with his steering rack woes and figured it was my time too! This morning there was a puddle of power steering fluid on the garage floor near the driver's side front tire. I'm guessing that either the rack or the pump has developed a leak. Any advise on how to proceed on this? I feel fairly comfortable doing my own work (did the strut -- cut -n- gut -- procedure myself) -- is this a DIY type job? If I need to buy a new rack and/or PS pump is OEM the way to go? Is Redline D4 ATF the reccomended PS fluid? Thanks in advance. Date: Wed, 14 Sep 2005 11:04:06 -0500 From: Jamie Howton <jhowton@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Power Steering Problem The first thing I'd do is check the hoses at the base of the reservoir, it might just be those clamps. Both the rack and the pump can be replaced at home by a reasonably competent home mechanic, the first step is to find out where it's leaking from however. As far as fluid goes, any D4 ATF will work for this application, Redline as well as any other I suppose. Regards -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL
