Date: Fri, 7 Oct 2005 13:01:35 -0400 From: <cteague@cox.net> Subject: 3mm Wheel Spacers I'm looking for a pair of 3mm E36 wheel spacers. I have some 5mm H&R ones, but I need some thinner ones. Some told me Tirerack sold them, but I called them this morning, and they said they did not. Anyone know of a source for 3mm E36 wheel spacers? Chris

Just a thought. That's pretty thin. Chris what's so close that a 5mm won't do? Tire too close to the strut but yet so wide it touches the outer fender? Maybe roll the fender? I have noticed a clicking or rapid fire pop from time to time, especially when turning. Changing the differential fluid has cured this issue for me. It increases in frequency with road speed and goes away when I apply the brakes. Does this sound like a wheel bearing? >> I had the opportunity to dig into this problem last night and here's what I found so far: CV joint boots are intact, no tears or cracks at all. Movement of the axle through the joint appears to have no slop. Rear brakes are about 75% worn but the caliper dust seals are intact and there is little resistance pressing the pistons back into the calipers. Although they are due a rebuild, I don't think there's any binding here. With the calipers removed there was still grinding and resistance when trying to turn the wheels. I backed off the parking brake adjusters approximately 1/3 of a revolution and "Hey Presto", no more resistance. I adjusted the parking brakes a couple of months ago when I installed new brake rotors, there was no rubbing then. I removed the right side rotor and found a nice coating of rust forming on the inside of the rotor hat. I am guessing that I adjusted the parking brakes too close to the rotor (they would stop the car at 4 clicks of the handle) and as soon as the rotors started to rust, the pads started to bind. I did also notice that when I turn each wheel, the axle will rotate a small amount before the differential starts to rotate the other axle. The amount of movement is very small, maybe 1-2 degrees, but I am wondering if this is normal or if it is indicative of some sort of differential issue. I will put everything back together this weekend after I install new pads, bleed the brakes and make a few suspension adjustments. I'll post again after I test drive the car and verify that the problem is gone. Regards Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

With no spacer, it rubs hard on the inside, and I think that's causing some snap oversteer. I went to a 5mm spacer, and it clears the inside fine now, but is rubbin the fenders. They are already rolled. I'm sure I could squeeze them more if I ground out the undercoating first. So that's still an option. But someone told me Tirerack did have 3mm spacers (BBS I think), so I thought I'd see if I can try those first. Othewise, it's grind out the undercoating, and roll them more. ;-) Chris > That's pretty thin. Chris what's so close that a 5mm won't do?
