Patrick's pretty much got it covered. Most of the individual indicators use a 1.2W bulb, whereas the general illumination bulbs are 5W. This may be the one you'll need to "backlight" the odo. The two bulbs may also be slightly different sizes, so it should be fairly easy to see which is which. The bulbs use the same bayonet-type bulb holder you are familiar with from the OBC, and the bulbs can be obtained at most any auto parts store (as you also probably already know). Have fun! I then upgraded to GC advance design and bumped the spring rate up to 600f/700r and the ride was much less bouncy on the highway. At least for the two days I drove it on the "street" before it became a track only car. Try stiffening things up to see if that keeps things under control, but try it slowly and methodically. There are about three full turns of adjustment on my front struts, I imagine their E36 kit will be similar. The car should feel planted -- not bouncy -- with the GC kit. About the stiff adjuster -- I'd call the guys at GC to talk about it. Mine are really stiff too, but not so stiff as to round out the adjuster knob. -zs ----- Original Message ---- From: Alan Leung <alanleung100@hotmail.com> To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Thu Oct 13 09:58:25 2005 Subject: [E36M3] My Suspension Upgrade Journey Part IV - Driving Impression - Street Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 11:55:04 -0500 From: "Alan Leung" <alanleung100@hotmail.com> Subject: My Suspension Upgrade Journey Part IV - Driving Impression - Street Part IV (street) Today is the first day I drive to work after getting my car back from my $400 alignment last night. This morning I adjusted all 4 Konis half-turn from full soft and off I went. First impression was that for how stiff the springs are the ride was firm but nowhere near harsh. One thing was that on rippled surface the car feels quite bouncy. It took a few bounces for the car to settle down. Is it supposed to be like that or how should I adjust the shocks to fix that? For sharp changes like expansion joints the suspension handled those well. The road was damp this morning from the rain last night so I havent got the chance to fully evaluate the handling but thats what the track is for this weekend, isnt it? Question: The adjustment pin on one of the front struts is so stiff itd round out the Koni plastic knob. I needed a plier to turn it. Is it normal? These are the same pins that were sticking out of the box when I received them. Could it be damaged? #6. [Fwd: [E36M3] Odometer light replacement] - from jbjerke@charter.net

Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 16:12:34 -0400 From: <jbjerke@charter.net> Subject: [Fwd: [E36M3] Odometer light replacement] Just did this on my Wife's 97 M3. No need to remove the wheel/airbag etc. Undo the two phillips head screws holding the cluster in. Slide the cluster back towards the wheel as far as you can. Now the hardest part is unplugging the three (IIRC) wiring harnesses. There's a lever on each that locks them in place. Rotate the levers and unplug the harnesses (I saw a diagram of this somewhere??). Now hold the cluster against the back of the steering wheel and turn the wheel clockwise with the cluster and it's out. The bulb(s) just plug into the back of the cluster and can be bought at any auto parts store. May want to replace others as long as you have it out as the bulbs are inexpensive. Took me 15 minutes the first time. #7. Timing Chain Cover - from Steve Klein

Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 16:10:44 -0500 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Timing Chain Cover At last. I'm finally prepared to replace the primary timing chain this weekend, but have one last big question: Can the timing cover come off with the head and oil pan in place? The gaskets are for the sides only which means the top and bottom are sealed by the head and oil pan gaskets respectively. If this is so, will I be able to loosen the oil pan enough (1/4" or so) to facilitate removal? And I will take side by side pics of the original (150k/mi.) chain and measure them. thanks, Steve

Your shocks as set are underdamped for the stiffness of the springs. Depending on where you live - Wait, wait! Quick detour to <http://www.risingconcepts.com/frapper/e36m3listers>, you're in Minneapolis, damn this is cool! - and what the roads are like there you may find you'll have to make compromises about acceptable comfort vs. proper damping. I keep my Koni DA's (which are in a stiffer range than SA's) set rather light and bouncy except when on track. This helps keep my fillings and kidneys in their respective places. > Question: > The adjustment pin on one of the front struts is so stiff it'd round out the > Koni plastic knob. New Konis are delivered with a plastic shipping cover over the adjuster tab to prevent damage. I'd say you've got a problem, although it may be one you can live with. The plastic Koni knobs are crap anyway, so you might want to invest $25 in one of these from VPD, see 6th item on page: <http://victoryproductdesign.com/tools_main.htm>. Alternatively you can take a screwdriver, cut the blade off, then make a slot in the end to engage the Koni tab.
