#2. Timing chain cover: Reposting - from Steve Klein

Date: Fri, 14 Oct 2005 12:36:22 -0500 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Timing chain cover: Reposting I thought I'd repost this since I didn't get a bite the first time: Can the timing cover come off with the head and oil pan in place? The gaskets are for the sides only which means the top and bottom are sealed by the head and oil pan gaskets respectively. If this is so, will I be able to loosen the oil pan enough (1/4" or so) to facilitate removal? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Steve

My parents' '88 528e had a vacant spider nest inside of the instrument plexiglass for many years. I tried pulling the instrument cluster to remove it, but no dice -- the plexi was attached too firmly to the cluster housing to do a safe (read: not cracking the plexi) removal. Point is that critters can get in and get out of there. -zs ----- Original Message ---- From: Jim Bassett <jim@jimbassett.com> To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Fri Oct 14 10:12:12 2005 Subject: RE: [E36M3] Re: indicator lamp replacement Date: Fri, 14 Oct 2005 10:04:43 -0700 (PDT) From: "Jim Bassett" <jim@jimbassett.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Re: indicator lamp replacement On Fri, October 14, 2005 7:02 am, Patrick Goss - PA said: > Ditto on my cluster too. At worst you should be able to loosen the front oil pan bolts and remove the vanos cover which bolts up to the head. I just reassembled my motor last month, but of course I put the timing chain cover on first, then the head, and then the pan, and then the vanos cover. Beats me. I'd imagine that the E46 M3 tranny would be the best bet since that's the highest torque original application. I back my M Coupe up to the garage door, and when I first fire the thing when it's cold, there is an extremely pronounced low rumble booming off of the door.. idle seems to be around 750-800rpm.. the thing just sounds bassy as hell. Let it sit at idle for about 30 seconds, and all of a sudden all of the boom is gone and idle sounds "normal", but the engine speed is the same. I never noticed this on my 95 M3.. maybe it's an 3.2/OBD-II thing, or maybe it's because the e36/8's exhaust is so much louder. My current thinking is that maybe it runs really rich on startup and that's why it's louder? I'm not sure that makes sense though... - reid > UUC is loud at first startup of the car. With the stock exhaust I never noticed it. Could be because it's so quiet anyway. I did talk to UUC and they gave some suggestions on getting the exhaust centered and how to get it to stay that way. They make sense. We'll see.
