The basic procedure is that you need to get a letter from BMW stating what it will take to make the car comply. In the case of an e36 m3, the answer is that you need a USA gauge cluster. You can have it installed in Canada, in which case you will sail through customs. If you arrive at the border and its is not converted, I think you sign something that you will convert it in XX days. You will also no be able to register it until customs says its OK. Installing a new gauge cluster is easy. Working thru the whole mileage thing is not. I wanted my mileage to read correctly, and it took the local BMW dealer two tries and 3 weeks to get the mileage module re-programmed by New Jersey to show the correct numbers. You may or may not have top pay customs. I did, but I think it was only because I opened my mouth. Have all your paperwork in order, and be prepared to pay 3% duty. But don't volunteer to ;-). The exact procedure I followed was: 1. Make down payment on car 2. Obtain letter from BMW stating that "BMW vin # blaaa will meet US safety and emission requirements if a USA gauge cluster is installed" 3. Pay Canadian dealer to install cluster 4. Argue with local bank about wire exchange rate. Negotiate better deal. Wire full payment. 5. Insure car using payment receipt and old plates that I will transfer 5. Fly to Canada to pick up car. Find that gauge cluster reads 35,000 MILES (when the car had 35,000 KILOMETERS). Grumble and complain. 6. Drive to border. Show paperwork from BMW and work order from Canadian dealer show gauge cluster replacement. Custom agent impressed with my preparation. 7. Ask question about taxes to nice customs agent. Who then responds "You need to pay duty? Hmm, I guess you do". Swear under my breath. Pay 3% duty. 8. Drive 400 miles home. Bring car to local dealer. 9. Calculate ACTUAL mileage car has (35,000 KM*0.621M/Km + (35,400 "miles" - 35,000"miles") = 21748+400 = 22148 10. Wait two weeks and pay way too much money for dealer to get the mileage thing right I bought a Canadian car because I wanted a m3/4 with heated seats, SR and fold down rear seats. All were standard in Canada. A few other extras that are not on USA cars: 1. Tilt wheel standard 2. All windows have "express down" feature 3. Drives window has 'express up" ( I think - not really sure now) Anyway - good luck! Dave 98 m3/4

My M3 Sedan has "express up" on both front windows (not on the rear ones for obvious reasons). All four have "express down". </nitpick alert> Jim Bassett - avoiding spec writing :-)

Umm, stock links don't cost anywhere near $110 a set, closer to half that for a set. Regards, Rich

#8. Check your guide bolts! - from Robert S. Hatrak II

While preparing for a track event this last weekend I discovered a problem with several of my guide bolts when changing brake pads. Two of the bolts had severely stretched threads, and one of the bolts snapped. Thanks to the help and generosity of local club racer Kirk Lachman, I was able to attend the event. Kirk quickly was able to remove the threads that had snapped off inside the caliper and loaned me a handful of new bolts. I made the mistake of not having any spares on hand, and without Kirk that mistake would have cost me a missed event as well as my entry fee. I highly recommend that anyone who changes their own brakes keep some spares on hand. You never know when you may need them. Thanks Kirk! Rob Hatrak E36 M3 Sin City Chapter - BMW CCA

The torque spec on these isn't very high... Thanks Kirk for letting the track monkey play! Chester

Canada got a limited run of Euro-Spec cars for the first year of production until the US-Spec M3 superceeded the Euro in the North American Market. Therefore, you have to deal with all the emission BS. Drive Safely, Raza
