#5. Oil Leak - from Burgess, Kim L

Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 11:34:47 -0700 From: "Burgess, Kim L" <kim.l.burgess@boeing.com> Subject: Oil Leak I have a significant amount of oil on my transmission and oil is finding it's way to my exhaust and fumes are entering the cabin via the HVAC. I replaced the cam cover gasket and 15 preload grommets. I still have an oil issue. Any hints on how to address this? The parts guy selling the gasket to me told me that the gasket is intended to be installed dry, no sealant. Can the plastic Cam Cover warp over time and not properly engage the cylinder head seal plane, failing to seal properly. Is there any other possible source of an oil leak between the engine and fire wall? Thank You Kim L Burgess

Mostly dry, but when I replaced mine, I used sealant at the 90 degree corners front and back. Is there any other possible source of an oil leak between the engine and > fire wall? Dipstick guidetube. As mentioned above, the rear seal. Mine leaked and the leakage was visible on the underside of the transmission. You could see the oil buildup on the bell housing lower vent(?) hole. One way to check is to add a flourescent dye to your oil. NAPA has kits for oil, antifreeze, etc. They work pretty well. The one hassle is finding a good blacklight. I cheaped out and bought a blacklight tube from Radio Shack. unfortunately it's not directional and doesn't put out much light, so you have to get it close to the leak, which can be difficult in a convoluted engine bay. -- Murray Roblin Palo Alto
