My car has been doing this for three years. Dealer could never find anything wrong, no codes set, etc. I cleaned the speed sensor, swapped it with the race car, etc. but the problem persists. Mine only ever fails on long trips, and it won't ever fail while I'm still moving. But if I drive for, say, 4-5 hours and then get caught at a light, when I start up again the speedo won't work. I asked the question several times on the digest a couple years back, but nobody had ever had the problem diagnosed and repaired by a dealership. Presumably, I suppose, because the dealership wouldn't be able to reproduce the problem, unless they paid a tech to take the car for long drives until the issue surfaced again. My advice: Live with it and curse BMW under your breath every time it happens. That's what I do! Shane K. > 7. speedo at Zero > by: Brad Sunshine <bsuns@yahoo.com> Thanks to all who responded. The darn thing actually worked on the way home! When I get a chance I will take a look at the diff sensor and wiring. Obviously if it quits working again the chance will be alot sooner! I am going to be ordering a Conforti chip in the next week but thought I would check and see if anyone on this list had a used one for sale. If anyone has one...please contact me off-list. Dave T.

The sensor is located in the Diff. It is a magnetic sensor. As the car gets more and more miles on it metal particles collect around the Magnetic sensor. The fix is simply to remove it (its at the back of the diff) clean it wit brake cleaner. Re install it. Have the fluid changed in the diff and hopefully you are on your way. At least try this before you tear out the instrument cluster. The procedure shouldn't take more than 20 minutes. Tom Kallay 98 SC DINAN M3

Mine did and I replaced the speedo sensor that is in the back of the diff. You unplug it and pull it out. If it has a lot of metallic sludge on it you may have a more serious problem. My sensor was full of sludge and although the new sensor worked my left axle fell out a week later. Jay 95M3 215,000 new dif orig clutch

#5. repacing my fuel sender, anything else while i'm in there? - from Theodore Serbinski

Date: Tue, 1 Nov 2005 13:47:21 -0500 From: Theodore Serbinski <stanson@gmail.com> Subject: repacing my fuel sender, anything else while i'm in there? Guys, was working on my 1997 M3 this past weekend when my dad and myself accidently broke the little plastic nose to the fuel sender as we were changing the main gasket (hopeflly fixing the large evap leak CE code!). We epoxed it back on since there was actually a metal tube inside the plastic for the gas to flow through. Seemed to work. Then the other day I smelled gas and sure enough something was leaking every so slightly. Figure we need to replace the whole unit: http://tinyurl.com/8r4zo Is there anything else we should replace too? Seems the main rubber hose might need to be replaced but that looks like it might be too tricky to get off, a bit of a squeeze. Anything else though? Also, does anyone know about mixing gasoline and epoxy? Does gas eat away at epoxy at all or can it seep through epoxy since it is so volatile? Just wondering there. Thanks! ted

My motor is stock with Conforti Intake and Shark Injector. I am interested in what people are happy or unhappy with for choices. Use of the car is occasional daily driver and track car. Is a simple FGR8KQC (copper) Bosch a good choice? I see Turner promotes FGR8KQE (Nickel-Yttrium).
