Date: Wed, 09 Nov 2005 13:01:32 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: Peake Code: EA - Cat gone bad? Last night on my drive home for an incredible three days of on-track action, I got a Check Engine light with a Peake Research code of: EA - "Catalyst Efficiency below threshold" Cylinders 4-6 The car is a '99 with about 154K miles. There has been some recent rattling, which seems to be coming internally from one of the cats. ----- But this could be the floor heat shields which are known to fatique around the fasteners and fall down and rest on the exhaust, causing rattles. Also check the rear muffler hangers which can and cause extra movement. I had rattles and suspected a broken brick in cat. Thankfully my case was a combination of both the items I mentioned and the cat is fine and quiet still. Should I take this to mean that it's time to replace my cats? ------ Check some other things first, like what I mentioned. What sort of run condition will it cause to drive with them as-is temporarily? Lean? Rich? Neither? If it is actually time to replace them, is it best to change the 02 sensors at the same time? ----- Depends, you're not sure if the cat is indeed toast yet. When was your last inspection and what did it test at? How many miles logged since then, doesn't normally happen overnight... I've heard of faulty cats causing havoc if backpressure is enough to pull chunks of a broken cat back into the engine, but this was back in my SHO days which is a completely different animal. I wouldn't be particularly happy if a cat failed and the broken pieces ended up in the muffler either. Also check your engine temp, (sticky thermostat), I've been hearing some possible connections between unheated cats throwing codes too, although I haven't confirmed any of this yet myself. The SHO guys used to say carry a spare thermostat at all times as one stuck open will quickly ruin a cat. A plugged up cat (caused by running too rich), will just choke performance. I'd only replace the sensors if they are the cause of the failure, but then the peak scanner will tell you which of the four are faulty. Patrick Thanks! Maybe, but you know what the usual OBD-II response is: reset the CE light, drive the car. If the same fault comes back, look into fixing it; if it doesn't come back it was a glitch that set the overly-picky (IMO) OBD-II system. Jim Bassett

It's the C33, doesn't matter if the car is Harmon Kardon or standard. You're best off saving grief and time and just buying a new cd deck that you do like (I'd recommend Alpine 9833, 9835, 9855, 9853 or 04 model clarion) Harmon Kardon is terrible, and that radio has many issues they all get over time including the display going out, the volume knob ceasing to work, and the power supply going bad. IMHO YMMV

The after-cat sensors only tattle on what has already happened. It's the pre-cat sensors that determine exhaust composition and cause the ECU to do its thing accordingly (except in WOT condition). > If it is actually time to replace them, > is it best to change the 02 sensors at the same time? Expected O2 sensor life is in the 80-100K miles range. But if they're still working.... I have a head unit with problems if anyone wants a C33. (YUCK!) Crutchfield sells some decent decks and the real advantage is they give you the harness and antenna adapter. It is indeed a Blaupunkt and combined with the factory HK upgraded speakers system and amp offers a sound improvement over the OEM BMW cassette. You loose the weather band of the cassette unit, but gain some other cool features like station, song, & artist recognition. Another choice is the beckerHK traffic pro navigation head unit which I currently have now. Its of equal quality to the CD43 with the addition of navi to ruin your self reliance on finding your own way, but I've found the normal stereo/radio controls aren't as friendly for new passengers as when I had the CD43.
