I actually like the DSC on my M5 for street driving. It allows enough wheelspin in cold or wet weather so it doesn't prevent acceleration and it helps with getting the most out of the available traction. It also pretty much prevents the car from getting sideways. It wasn't programmed as nicely on my E46 330i, however, it would engage very abruptly and early in that car. It was a PITA. For the track I agree it's useless, but I can see how total novices could benefit from it, they have enough to worry about as it is. -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL

At the time I didn't think I was going to buy a dedicated track car, so I didn't want something larger. Now that I've bought a Porsche for a track car, I wish I'd bought an Allroad instead of the S4. The back seat in the S4 is pretty small, the only place the baby seat fits with any comfort is in the middle. Performance wise I've got all the basic bolt ons on the S4, chip, exhaust, I gutted the pre-cats in the downpipes, suspension, stoptechs. Performance wise it's a monster. Loads of torque and it's quite fast, my current setup is probably close to 350hp, 400ft lbs of torque. The stock brakes are good for the street but miserable on the track as they're not cooled and there's no way to cool them. No room for brake ducts etc. That coupled with the high price of brake pads and rotors makes the jump to Stoptechs very reasonable. Traction is amazing, it's very hard to unstick the car. It's pretty neutral with springs/shocks/big rear swaybar installed. Quite tossable with good steering feel. Very usable space with the wagon, I brought a 32" TV home in its box in the hatch. The sedans are far more common, but space wise are much less usable. I'm pleased with it, when the turbos go I'll upgrade to the RS4/K04's and have a reliable 450hp/torque... -------------- Original message -------------- > What are your impressions of the S4 Avant? My 95 M3 of course did not have traction control, but the traction control ligh in my M Coupe flashes CONSTANTLY. Sure I tend to corner quicker than most, but it's amazing that coming out of almost any corner, regardless of how much throttle I'm giving it, the light is flashing. Sometimes I just give the car some stick on a ramp and see the light start flashing.. sheesh! - reid

Yes, I have a few, but my first 928 is still with me as a GT2S racecar, www.928Racing.net . It was a bad year for it, went through two motors :( But I am spending money on a stroked/bored motor to be ready for 2006 or 2007. If it won't be ready for 2006, I will have another 5L motor ready for 2006 instead. There are a few in the U.S. prepared to the level I am working towards and they are competitive in the GT2 PCA class, so that is my goal as well. The M3 is my alternate track car, or as I tell my wife.... another racecar in waiting :) I will continue to orient towards track but will keep it street legal for the near future anyways. Still have intents of BMWCCA Club Racing it, but my intentions are great than my budget... Currently I use it and my Suburban as my everyday vehicles, but my commute is only by foot so I can do pretty much whatever I want to it. How long do you > expect to keep your E36 M3? > > I have had my '96 M3 for 7.5 years, and intend to keep it FOREVER. I am a long time E30 owner that just purchased a really nice '95 M3. Right now our car is bone stock (boges and everything) and just a superb car for street driving. Love it. Such a nice combo of civilized and fast. After being in E30's for years its really nice to have a quiet car that rides nice and still whips my E30's in every way without the noise and ride of the E30. Anyway....we also plan on keeping it forever. Got it cheap. Own it. Parts are almost the same price as the E30 for most items and since I do all my own work the car is in a constant state of improvement. Plus, I find it a real joy to wrench on, all the things that were tough to get at on the E30 are easy on this platform. The real thing that makes this car a keeper for me is the paint and interior...they are both pristine...and I would rather rebuild a bunch of engines than try and duplicate a factory paint job on a 10 year old car. Original owner had it from '95 to 2003 and it was always garaged. It really shows. Perhaps in 10 years when the E46 M3 has come down in price I would consider owning one of those, but none of the other 'new' BMW's do much for me, so if anything I plan on purchasing more E36 M3's. BTW: Saw a new 3 series rolling down PCH last week with a "M" badge on the back. What was really funny is the driver was laughing and having a good time with his passenger then he saw me check out his "M3" (I was driving the M3 at the time) and he got this look like "busted" on his face. It was classic. Dave T

The double-cluthing a British thing? Simon does it as well, that dude can drive! Actually I've started to as well, the M3 grinds in 3rd when trying to downshift above certain speeds and the car is cold, double-clutching has eliminated the problem and since it's kinda fun I've started to do it on every downshift. ;-) My loyalty to the M3? I've had it 3 or 4 months and I could let it go anytime now. Ever since I sold my E30 M3 cars are just cars now (maybe a part of me went with that car), this is the 2nd E36 I've owned this year. :-( Carlos. (holding out for a race car sort of)
