There is no drain for the PS. You can either suck fluid out of the reservoir with a basting bulb and top up, or disconnect a hose. There's of course residual fluid in the steering rack, hoses and the PS pump. Depending on how diligent you're feeling you can work this out by turning the steering wheel back and forth lock to lock. The system is self bleeding, so you won't have to worry about air bubbles. Well this is one of the few areas of the car I've neglected (will be the first PS fluid change in 44K miles). Looks like after the wife finishes using the basting bulb on the Thanksgiving turkey, I'll make a quick run out to the garage and use it on the PS reservoir. Then refill with turkey gravy...(I mean Mobil 1 ATF) ;-)) Last question on this. What is the normal maintenance schedule for the PS fluid? Is it one of those "lifetime" deals? cheers, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA #13 BSP -----Original Message----- From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> To: E36M3 <e36m3@bmw-m.net> Sent: Tue, 22 Nov 2005 08:51:26 -0500 Subject: [E36M3] Re: Stiff steering Date: Tue, 22 Nov 2005 08:49:39 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Re: Stiff steering on 11/22/05 8:31 AM, mdriver13@aol.com wrote: > How does one change the power steering fluid? I chose behr because I had never heard of Nissen. Bimmerzone messed up and sent it 2nd Day instead of 3 Day. So I guess I'll be fixing the car real early on Friday. However, after seeing the gravy-like consistency of the P/S fluid that came out of both cars on their first change, it should be :-) Also be aware, there is a filter for the system, but it's part of the fluid reservoir. It's ~$40 and I always get a new one whenever the fluid is changed. And real hose clamps! My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - BTDT 1993 325is #44 JP - BTDTx2, and again soon with new rack next month

Different systems, different fluids. PS can be flushed by disconnecting a hose from the reservoir. Not sure if that is the best way though. JFGI?? :-) And to be too much of a smart-a$$ (yeah, right :-)), both changing the fluid and replacing the reservior aren't terribly difficult. Spend a few minutes under the hood/under the car, check it all out, and proceed with what seems obvious. The easiet way to drain the fluid, IME, is to remove one of the hoses at the pump or rack. For the reservior, remove the two hoses at it's bottom, and it's secured with a 8mm or 10mm head bolt. Here's a picture of the system: <http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CD93&mospid=47504&btnr=32_0650&hg=32&fg=20> There, now I've done everything but actually change the fluid for you.
