Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 00:02:30 -0500 From: Don Eilenberger <deilenberger@verizon.net> Subject: How stiff is stiff? In rear suspension terms? I tried pushing down on my rear suspension the other day after hearing the 'chuckling' sort of noise coming from the rear, and to my surprise, I can barely get it to move. I'm not that light any more.. so I tried sitting on the trunk lip with the trunk open. If the car moved 3/8" that was a lot. If I press down hard on a fender - I can perhaps get almost 1/2". There is no way to get it rocking up and down (the old way to test for bad shocks..) The front end is not as firm - I can get it to deflect an inch or perhaps more by pressing down on a fender. I'm just wondering if something isn't quite right about my rear suspension (although I'd be hard pressed to figure out what.. AFAIK - stock springs, new Monroe shocks - which did compress when I put them in - and it appears to be riding at the correct height..) So how stiff is your rear end (pun intended..)? PO said it had been doing it for a year or so before and never had it looked at as nothing worse had ever happened. I worried about the window falling off the tracks for a year or so and now just live with it. Still does it every time the window is rolled up or down! Just one of the car's very few character flaws, I suppose. Kurt J. Resener '95 ///M3 '01 X5 '97 A6 Quattro Avant '75 Merc 280c DISCLAIMER Important! Let's see if there's any consensus on this one: My ABS light kicks in about 8-10 minutes after driving into work. It will reset if I pull over and restart the car. There's nothing special about the road, I'm usually cruising down Route 78 towards Jersey City at 615am. It did it with both the summer and now the winter tires. It usually does it on the return from work, but not every single time. Is it that grey relay that folks have mentioned before, or am I going to get codes pulled (will it hurt??)? Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 09:57:37 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Early Xmas Present for Yourself? A friend just bought one of these 24V impact guns: <http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=92907> That translates to a claimed 135 ft-lb of torque for only $60 (sale price). It easily takes off lug nuts torqued to 100 ft-lb. You only get one battery, but there's a 1-hour fast charger. Weirdly enough an extra battery costs $50, so all in all you'd be better off simply buying two impact gun kits! The unit is quite heavy compared to my 80 ft-lb 12V Snap-on, but that's no big deal for blowing off a few lug nuts at the track. The gun has variable speed and is of course reversible. Not bad for $60. Neil Fort Wayne, IN 96 M3 - Bastard child 03 525iT - Sterling Grey Metallic 77 MGB - Original owner, need to sell 05 Mini - Cooper S with LSD!

#5. Power steering pump leakage? - from Jim Bassett

Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 10:16:13 -0800 (PST) From: "Jim Bassett" <jim@jimbassett.com> Subject: Power steering pump leakage? Seems to be the week for P/S issues. Are there gaskets or seals in the pump itself that wear out/degrade, resulting in a leak? While changing the oil on the M3 last night I saw what appears to be P/S fluid leaking. Not from the usual places that I can see, and as a matter of fact all the hoses are fairly new (last Nov, actually). It's not a huge leak (the fluid level is OK) although it did leave a spot or two in the garage floor. The thing that really ticks me off is that it's coated what was a very clean underside of the car (after the rear main seal fix). Grrr :-) The wettest area appears to be the area around the banjo both for the high pressure hose and the mounting bolt nearby, but that just may be due to gravity. Any thoughts? Thanks, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - leaking again, dammit 1993 325is #44 JP - several leaks, getting fixed next month

Well, one thing you can do yourself is clean the ABS wheel speed sensors. If that doesn't fix the issue, and since there's a computer involved, yeah it might not be a bad idea to get the codes read out (if convenient). My 2 cents, Jim Bassett

Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 14:57:10 -0500 From: Don Eilenberger <deilenberger@verizon.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] How stiff is stiff? Kent, Thanks. I'm just guessing (have to go look on realoem..) that the convertible uses different springs than the sedan. I've never seen the weight distribution on the 'vert's - but I'm willing to bet they are heavier in the butt than a normal M3. More "stuff" going on back there (top motors, mechanisms, top-storage compartment, monster [ha!] subwoofer) so to maintain ride height and ride - BMW would have to use different springs. Mine have 4 orange/yellow bands of paint on them.. I'm guessing that's a spring ID but dunno what it means. Just looked on realoem - they give no info - sez see your dealer. Looked in the ETK - gets complicated.. have to go to spring chart and enter in all "extra equipment" (like AC, electric seats, HK audio).. once you add in ANY (or ALL) of these items - one spring number appears. If you add none - a different spring number appears. Both these numbers are both different from the "standard" coupe spring numbers. Thanks again, surprisingly - I rearranged all the wireless crap in the trunk (don't ask..) so it shouldn't bounce around and I think the noise is gone. Hope so.. now to get the wobbly rims un-wobbled.. (Internet almost-snow-tire-deal on original Motorsport lightweights.. seemed like a good deal.. at the time..) Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! #9. SOLVED! Re: large EVAP leak, what to do? - from Theodore Serbinski

Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 16:48:32 -0500 From: Theodore Serbinski <stanson@gmail.com> Subject: SOLVED! Re: large EVAP leak, what to do? Well guys I think I finally solved it, the elusive FE Large Evap Leak. Turns out that if you replace the rubber gaskets around both the fuel pump and fuel level sensor, it fixes the code. And what an easy fix. Just need 2 of these rubber gaskets: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CD93&mospid=47504&btnr=16_0211&hg=16&fg=15 and then just pop up the backseat, unscrew both the pump on the passengers side and fuel sensor on the drivers side, change the gaskets and voila, no more check engine light. Good idea to change those clamps on the hoses there too. Finally! ted On 3/22/05, Kin K.
