#1. Overhauling ZKW Ellipsoids - from Marc Plante
Top
Date: Sun, 18 Dec 2005 09:52:05 -0500 From: Marc Plante <marcva@gmail.com> Subject: Overhauling ZKW Ellipsoids Learning experience and question. First Learning Experience Finally got around to reinstalling the ZKW Ellipsoids that I had in my 1993 325 into the M. When I turned them on to test my wiring, I noticed that they were pretty dusty and dingy inside, so I decided to take the units apart to clean them. I made a bit of a mess on one side getting the inner lens out of the assembly. It is held in place by two tabs and a few spots of caulk. I didn't check the tabs too carefully and forced the wrong one to release the lens, breaking the tab. Upon reassembly the lens is held in place by the reflector behind it, but it rattles a bit. I'm going to grab some high temperature silicone to try to attach it a bit better. So if you decide to open up your ellipsoids to work on them or attach those wonderful fake angel eyes, note that the retaining tabs are not identical. Now the question: As I worked on the lenses, I noted that the outer glass is fairly sandblasted. More so than I gathered when I was last using the lights a couple years back. Which leads me to my question: Has anyone used any of the glass polishing or restoration products (i.e. for windshields) I noticed that Zaino has something, and there are a couple other products leading up to professional businesses that perform this service. Does it work? I think I remember hearing that they can ,"remove anything that you can't catch a fingernail in," but wasn't sure. #2. Climate Control Issue - from Mike VanAmburgh

Date: Sun, 18 Dec 2005 17:02:47 -0600 From: "Mike VanAmburgh" <mvanamburgh@charter.net> Subject: Climate Control Issue Hello, the wife's 97 M3/4's climate control has quit blowing air out of the vents. The fan seems to be working right but the air isn't getting out of the vents (no head, feet or defrost). I'm guessing a stuck flap somewhere but this doesn't seem to be common based on an archive search. All I found on the archives were many hits on power cycling issues. Any ideas? Another issue I have with the same car is the battery going dead overnight. There is a slight buzzing noise in the intake manifold area. I've disconnected the electrical connectors around the throttle body but the buzzing persists. I've also removed fuzes and relays for the fuel injection and ASC. I'm pretty sure this is what is draining the battery but I can't seem to find where it's coming from! Thanks in advance for your help! Mike (cold ride home today)

#3. Tranny Brace Bolts - from twisty M3

Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 08:30:17 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: Tranny Brace Bolts While putting my tranny brace back on the car this weekend, I broke one of the bolts which secures it to the body of the car. I believe it had been over-torqued by yours truly at some point in the past, as I was using proper specs this time, and heard a "Crack!!" Luckily it came out in one piece, but fell apart in my hand as got it out. I had the correct bolt size to replace it with, but not the factory piece which has a fairly thick washer attached (can't fit the bolt through the washer to use it), so I had to resort to stacking two standard washers to make it about the same thickness. Anything wrong with doing this, or should I make it a temporary fix only and replace all four bolts with the built in washer (as I'm sure they've all been equally over-torqued)? Thanks! Jonathan L.

I vote for the second option. Jim Bassett

#5. M8 Bolts?? - from twisty M3

Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 13:47:00 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: M8 Bolts?? So, it appears as though an M8 bolt I bought for my tranny brace doesn't fit. Size appears to be correct, but I didn't notice at first that the threads are much tighter. Is there a particular "name" or marking for the appropriate bolt (#4 in the link below), and am I better off looking in a hardware store or automotive? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BG93&mospid=47488&btnr=23_0118&hg=23&fg=10 This is just for temporary use until I order the appropriate factory bolt with washer, but I'd prefer not to drive around with only 3 holding the brace on. Thanks! Jonathan L.

There was a member recently that had a window issue/windows issue. I remember skimming over them and then deleting them. I can not find them in the archives. It seems that I may have the same issue and wanted to read up on what the resolution was. Does anyone have those emails by chance. Or can the original individual that had this problem email me? Thanks in advance. Michael Michalski A very cold 97 ///M3 Coupe here in Chicago (Current temp 3 degrees) Brrrrrr.

#10. Brake Light Failure - See Owner's Manual - from Shane Kleinpeter

Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 06:12:51 -0800 (PST) From: Shane Kleinpeter <sak335@yahoo.com> Subject: Brake Light Failure - See Owner's Manual AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH. If I see this message once more time I'm going to go nuts. Brake light switch was replaced about three months ago, probably unnecessarily. I replaced the bulbs in the two tail lights last night with new Sylvania bulbs. I have not replaced the third brake light bulbs yet (I have the Lux package spoiler with the ten or so small bulbs) but will probably do so tonight. All bulbs are working properly. Is there something I'm missing? I'd love to vent my feelings to the guy that decided that the message should scroll endlessly on the OBC when the computer "senses" this "failure". Thanks, Shane K.
