These are _within_ the rear tail light assemblies. Most likely you'll see that they are pitted or have small surface imperfections/wear on them. I clean the tangs with an electrical contact cleaner and it solves my problems --most times. On my 96, I have pitting on the bulb tangs that are closest to the center of the trunk. There are the brake lights. I haven't found a solution to repair the assembly completely, other than replacement. It doesn't appear the electrical contacts are replaceable or repiarable (galvanized sheet metal?). -tom eby 96 M3 74 02 --

I bought the "Rhodite" kit from Eastwood a few years ago to polish the windshield on my 325is. The product worked, but it was a lot of work and very messy. The product removed the background streak-haze created by years of windshield wiper traffic, but did not touch the millions of sand pits that are so common on BMW OE glass. The result was a very clear windscreen with lots of sparkly pits when driving into the morning/evening sun. As I recall, the directions cautioned against trying to remove scratches that are too deep (your reference to "catching your fingernail"). In a windshield doing that may result in an optical defect which could be very annoying. I think this would be a non-issue on a headlight lens - a slight aberration isn't going to matter. Pits in glass are usually much deeper than they are wide, deep enough that to polish them out you'd need to remove a considerable amount of material.. and since glass is hard - that's not easy. Plastic lenses can be refinished fairly easily since they are soft. As a try - you might consider getting a pair of the protective plastic covers various sources sell for glass lenses. In my experience - using this on the fog lights on my M3 - installed on a clean (but pitted) foglight - the pitting and scratches basically disappeared. What this indicated to me is the adhesive used to hold them on has an index of refraction fairly close to glass, so scattering losses (which make the pits visible) are low and the pits and scratches basically just go away. The right side original - well used and heavily pitted really can't be differentiated from the left side NEW fog light lens, even with the lights on. IF someone made an epoxy kit - with index matching epoxy (which exists - in a former life I did a lot of optics, plus it's what is used in the windshield kits for stone dings) to fill the pits and a kit to polish the epoxy filler down that might work also - but I haven't seen one. One thing - and someone can fill you in better than I can. Besides the brake light switches (two in one housing) there is also a sensor in the vacuum booster for the brakes that measures how far the pedal travels. I believe this can also cause the failure message, and I seem to remember someone here writing about it. It may have been me, and the error associated with this failure is for the ABS and ASC lights to come on at the same time. The error stored in the ABS computer is for "brake pedal travel sensor". Like Tom Eby, I had a similar problem and simply re-positioning the bulb holder's location in the socket seems to have cleared it up. Cheers, Jim Bassett

However, if you push on the door a few inches below the handle while lifting the door handle at the same time, it will open with no probelm. This is not the first E36 M3 that I have seen with this problem. Does anyone know what the fix is? Hunt
