I doubt the EVAP codes would have anything to do with it, but could the misfires be because of my cats going bad (i.e. blocked and not allowing proper flow)? Codes I pulled were: EVAP incorrect purge flow misfire cylinder #5 catalyst effeciency below threshold, 4-6 EVAP large leak detected misfire cylinder #6 I had a catalyst efficiency code a couple of weeks ago and a misfire in #4 about a week ago. Could they be related? Working on getting a cat replacement now. They rattle like mad and have 156K miles on 'em. Any input appreciated, Jonathan L.

With all the headlight upgrades and clear corner upgrades, I'm sure some of you have these lying around. Let me help you clean out your garage. Rather than cluttering up the list, send me a private e-mail if you have either of these available. Thanks, Tom Tice '98 M3/4 '93 325iS with one black eye '98 328iC '2002 325iT/5 '2002 X5

#3. E36 fuel pump similar enough to E46 fuel pump? - from Kirk

Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 21:28:36 -0800 From: "Kirk" <admranger@earthlink.net> Subject: E36 fuel pump similar enough to E46 fuel pump? So, I'm trying to figure out a way to get just a tad more fuel out of the tank before starvation without going whole hog on a sweet twin pump setup from Bimmerworld (truck needed a lot of new parts recently...). I see that Ben at Rogue has figured out that the E46 M3 uses a small reservoir around the base of the fuel pump (and it works on non-M3 E46's too) <http://www.rogueengineering.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category _Code=BMWGAS> Anyone know if this would work on an E36M3 fuel pump? I'd like to work my way up in costs gradually. I'm going to try Don's recommendation of trying the plastic covers to address some of the pitting. It's not terrible yet, so I think I have a good chance of cleaning up enough of it to be in good shape for $50 vs $250 (since I'd have to cover any new lights I bought). I realize I may end up with a $300 solution if I'm not satisfied with my partial fix, but I'm going to try the shorter solution anyhow. I'll report my results to other people that neglected the maintenance of their glass headlights. To be honest, I didn't think about the possibility of these lights pitting when I bought them. I thought I was rolling the dice on breakage, and I was willing to take that gamble vs the stoneguard. Lesson learned. Marc

As to the misfires, hmmm, spark plugs new? If so, you might try moving the coil from the offending cylinder to another cylinder to see if the fault follows the coil. But looks like you've had multiple misfires, so maybe there is a reaction to the bad cats (I don't know for sure). Take care of the cat first and then see if the misfires re-occur? I still vote for my first suggestion :-) Jim Bassett - always happy to help someone down the slippery slope

You're a braver man than I :-) I usually go right for the expensive solution, in order save time & frustration. Ahhhh, who am I kidding, I go for the expensive solution and STILL end up wasting time and getting frustrated. Fook. :-) Jim Bassett - planning a DIY P/S pump replacement next month, oh no

There's a little bracket that holds the P/S pump to the block. Mine was cracked and wasn't holding it to the block. Go figure... #8. PS pump r&r - from marco

Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2005 10:17:38 -0800 From: "marco" <m3driver@iname.com> Subject: PS pump r&r Just be careful inserting the bolts into the oil filter housing. The housing is aluminum I believe and it's VERY easy to mess up the threads in the housing even just finger tightening the bolts. Make sure you blow out any crud in the oil filter housing and the the bolt threads are nice and clean. Ask me how I know... My mechanic did give me a piece of advice that will (hopefully) save some frustration: loosen the bolts holding the pulley to the pump BEFORE I remove the pump. Better leverage that way. Jim Bassett

#10. Shrick Cams - from marco

Date: Wed, 21 Dec 2005 10:38:37 -0800 From: "marco" <m3driver@iname.com> Subject: Shrick Cams I understand the E36 schrick cams if installed and timed using the normal BMW procedure are off timing by something like 11 degrees. Anyone know if they are off retarded or advanced? I sold my old cams to someone and I want to make sure he has all the info he needs to do the install correctly. For a S50 motor if it matters. Marco
