So, I just put on a set of replacement cats, as my originals were rattling like crazy and throwing "Cat Efficiency Below Threshold, 4-6" codes. The donor cats are from the East coast, were donated at no cost (or shipping) but I also don't know the mileage. (??) Went on fine, no rattling and the car started and was rolled out of the garage and everything seemed perfect. Got back in the car shortly after and started her up to a CE light. Code was read as "Post-cat 02 sensor heater, cyl 1-3." hmm... I figured it might just be a fluke, as the rest of the car was nice and warm already from driving around all morning, but maybe the 02 sensor didn't like that. Started back off and drove with no issues. Next I stopped to fuel up, got back in and started it up to a CE light again... Same code, so reset it and then it didn't come on for the next start up. Seems every other start at this point, but I haven't let it cool completely either. I'll know soon, I suppose, if it comes back, but is the 02 heater sensor something that can be replaced without replacing the entire center section again, or is this actually part of the 02 sensor and that's all that needs to be replaced... any effect on performance until then? Upon restart the lights are off. Sometimes I can drive without them coming on at all. Other times it's every time and does not seem to be related to time or temperature. Any body have a clue? Most likely the brake pedal travel sensor. The best way to confirm this is to have the fault code read out of the ABS computer. Here's my post from 2003 detailing the fix: ------------------------------------ Apparently there's a pedal travel length switch/sensor in the brake booster, next to the master cylinder. This is what needs to be replaced. P/N 34 33 1 182 594 (list price $110.48) This is the repair kit which gets you the switch, o-ring, couple of circlips and several colored plastic end caps for the shaft of the switch. Access was a bit tight for me, I removed the vacuum hose from the intake, and the rubber boot from the air box to the throttle body so that I had a straighter path to the sensor. You'll need some circlip pliers and a screwdriver, I found, in order to remove the circlip (I still managed to break off a bit of the plastic on the brake booster that helps retain the circlip). Pump the brake pedal a few times to help release the pressure in the booster, unplug the connector and pull the switch out (there may still be some pressure, so be careful). Note the color of the plastic end cap of the old switch and install the same one on the new switch. Use the o-ring on the new switch. I didn't see one on the old one, and installed the new one without it at first. Vacuum leak resulted :-) Secure with new circlip, reconnect connector and any other items you may have removed and you're done. ---------------------------- Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP

It's part of the O2 sensor and can be replaced without removing the cats. There will be no performance degradation at all, this sensor only monitors the performance of the catalytic converter and is not used by the DME. Not an "official" schedule, but I think most people will put a new one in when they're doing the radiator - about every 50K or so. So, when was the last time your car got a new radiator? :-) > Is it difficult to do? I have seen the Beyern wheel ad in every Roundel. Well they have two styles (mesh and 5 spoke) in 18"x8.5" with 40mm offset for $208/wheel. The guy over the phone tells me they both run around 21 lbs. (not too heavy, not as light as SSR).
