#4. Seats? - from Stan Shaw

Date: Mon, 2 Jan 2006 12:00:26 -0500 From: "Stan Shaw" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Seats? I have been considering (for years) to race my '96 M3 in H stock BMWCCA racing. I have an Autopower rollcage ready to bolt in, I know it is not the best solution but .... Anyways, with regard to seats, is anyone out there using there M3 as a occasional street car and track/race car? If so, what seats are you using? Are you switching back and forth from race to stock seats when not racing the car? And yes, I know having a roll cage in a street car is not a good idea, but since BMWCCA requires a cage and I don't think I am ready to forgo it's use on the street yet. Idle thoughts.... So if you're going to race you better do it this year. And driving around in a car with a cage w/o a helmet is asking for a skull fracture. But you already knew that. You could always rent a race car and leave your street ride alone if it's cost that's a concern. Can the cage simply be welded to meet the rules criteria? I already have on race car, so two dedicated race cars seems a bit much.... even for me. I want to race in the stock M3 class, so it might be more of a driver's test than my racing my 928 in GT which is more of a money race... Cost is always a concern, as I can always spend more money. #10. Want to move to Recaros -- questions about airbags and pressure - from S Stiles
Top
Date: Mon, 2 Jan 2006 21:49:38 -0800 From: "S Stiles" <stiles_s@hotmail.com> Subject: Want to move to Recaros -- questions about airbags and pressure sensors... I'm hoping you guys can help point me in the right direction. I'd like to put some cloth Recaro sport seats in the M3, and pull out the leather, power, heated Vaders. To save some weight, gain some headroom (I hope), and to give me some more butt traction. Sounds like there are issues re: the passenger side airbag. In particular, you need some sort of pressure sensor to tell the ECU there's somebody in the pass seat (so the airbag will fire). I have a couple hopefully simple questions: 1) if I do this drivers-side only, do I have to screw w/the airbag sensors (are the sensors only applicable to the pass side)? 2) Can I really get the pass airbag to function w/a replacement seat? a) has anybody "sewn in" a pressure switch in an aftermarket seat? b) looks like (from realoem.com) the pressure sensors are no longer available new. Can I grab one from a junkyard seat? Cheapest options appreciated. I'm not much interested in the hack I've seen to fake out the sensor because I'm not sure whether it fakes it into thinking there's a passenger in the seat, or into thinking there isn't. I don't want to risk passenger safety. Thanks much for the info, Scott.
