#1. [E36M3] SMG Help - from Ricardo A. Mayer

Date: Fri, 27 Jan 2006 09:29:00 -0200 From: "Ricardo A. Mayer" <ramayer@terra.com.br> Subject: [E36M3] SMG Help Hi group, I live in Brazil and I have a1998 E36 M3 european SMG model. It has less than 30.000km, however, for the second time I have to replace the SMG pump (+$2,000.00), and as I investigated, this problem has ocurred with most SMG M3's in Brazil. When this problem occurs, you have to tow the vehicle because the emergency procedure described on the manual does not work. For this reason, I am thinking on converting my car from SMG to manual. My mechanic verified that all mechanic modifications are easy to do and it will be an original manual model. However, I am concerned with the DME that might have to be re-programmed. Does anybody has had any experience with a transformation from SMG to manual, or that is knowlegeable about this issue that could help me. Thanks a lot. Regards, Ricardo Mayer

Stan, Not saying it can't be done but I've got a really tight fit with this wheel size and 245 Hoosiers. They rub the front strut towers (self-correcting) and there's no room to spare on the outside either. Many of the C-Mod guys run 245's as well, and it doesn't seem to slow them down ; ^ ) Are you running Hoosiers as your daily driver tire!? Remember, a 245 Hoosier is a 255 of nearly any other brand. Hi Dave, The main reason for asking is that Hoosier is closing out last year's tires, and there are 255s on the list, but not 245s. Of course I run Hoosiers as my daily tires :-) Regards, Stan Shaw Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net Phone: (413) 599-0399 Fax: (413) 599-0421 Excell.Net Owner/Operator http://www.Excell.Net/ 928 Owners Club President http://www.928OC.org/ 928Racing.net Team Member http://www.928Racing.net/ "Liberty once lost is lost forever." - John Adams

The MSC 255 took some creative "rolling" to make them fit in front, slightly less so in the rear. The amount of rolling probably is stretching the rules in BMWCCA CR beyond the intent. The hoosiers in one dimension were actually bigger than the MSC. I doubt you'll get them to fit unless you're riding high. I can't get a 1/4" drive ratchet in there and I can't quite get enough leverage on the the socket alone with my fingers to crack 'em loose. My next plan of attack is to put a cut-off wheel in the dremel and take the heads off... but then how do I re-install when it comes back from the cage builder? I thought maybe I could use a phillips head screw and a right angle screw driver but its pretty tight in there. Any alternate idears before I go nuts with a sharp instrument? -- Walter ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

I get them mounted on the wheels, throw them on my car, head over to a deserted parking lot near my house and do a couple of tight figure eights and skid pads for good 5 mins. Check the temperature (usually up 5lbs by then) and drive back home. Jack up the car on all four corners and let the car sit (wheel off the ground or just take them off the car). Let it stay for 48 hours and they are done :) Either that or just take it out for a couple of laps at the track, last session, and let it sit overnight (quick and dirty approach). A.L. -------------------- 12 -------------------- Date: Wed, 25 Jan 2006 18:49:37 EST From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: heat cycling...yes, no, or maybe Group, I've been discussing this issue with some local autox members lately. The opinion of most is that it really seems to make little difference in tire wear for autox'ing, however, for track this is where it matters. What's this Group's opinion?? I've done it both ways, and my last set of tires for autox'ing performed well and lasted forever without having TireRack heat cycle them first. So I might be in agreement with them. After all, you can save an easy $60... regards, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe (sponsored by WCC, JT Designs) Philly Region SCCA 2005 Philly Region BSP Champion

Stock springs/sways. The only stiffer ride is under 40MPH going over bad pavement. Much, much better than the worn out stock struts/shocks with 100k miles. The rears raised the car noticeably (0.5 inch?). Professionally installed by very knowledgeable shop. -Jonathan E 95 M3

If need be, cut down the short end to make it shorter. If you need to make the long end longer, slip a small pipe over it. Epoxy. Also, I have a little ratchet that's designed for hex bits. It looks like a ratcheting open end wrench with a hex hole the size of standard bits. You can get allen head bits in different sizes. So, the total length is only as long as the bit itself. Maybe an inch. Bits could be cut down if needed.
