As sophisticated and integrated as the electronics are on modern OBDII BMW's, I think if you change anything, you will open up a can of worms. If you so much as leave your gas cap off, it will throw check engine warnings. I'm sure the DME and SMG are intimately connected. You will not only have to reprogram the DME, you will have to replace it. A new DME will probably be about $2,000 by itself. Then you get into all of the little things like wiring harnesses and brackets that don't mate up. And then there is the sourcing of a new/used non-SMG transmission. A new 6-speed transmission would probably cost $7,000. A used 6-speed could even be $3,000 and then you would not know how good it is. I am leery of buying somebody else's used transmission. A used transmission could fail and require $3,000 in repair. I don't mean to throw cold water on your idea, but I think in the short term, it is cheaper to just replace the SMG pump. I would recommend buying the pump from a BMW dealer, even if it costs more. You have to have the dealer install the pump. I don't know about Brazil, but in the US, BMW has a 12-month warranty on its parts. Maybe even longer warranty - it has been a long time since I had service done at the dealer. Good luck! Hi Jay, The problem isn't the studs; its that the Rogue Brand 10mm spacers will not work with Kosei K1 wheels. The chamfer on the spacers is larger than the corresponding chamfer of the wheels so the wheels never sit flush with the wheel hub, they ride on the chamfer. This allows the wheels to move around while on track, the lug nuts/bolts loosen up and then snap. When I bought the spacers the Rogue website didn't mention this incompatability, I can only assume they didn't know about it. I did let Ben Liaw know that the problem exists and he has since added a note to his website. I have also talked to at least three other people off list who had this exact same thing happen with the identical setup. I discovered the problem while rounding turn 14 at Road America, I heard a loud crack, I pulled into the pits to find two wheel bolts broken, the other three were loose. I replaced the bolts with some scrounged spares and the same thing happened the next session. I removed the spacers and have been fine ever since. I remember way back when Bekkers was selling new 6-speeds for $6,500 (I think they gave you a $500 core charge on your old 5-speed - for that little, I would have kept my transmission) and that didn't include a new 6-speed gearshift knob. If you were going from a 5-speed to 6-speed, you would also need a shorter driveshaft. Ricardo probably doesn't need a new driveshaft so he can save that expense. If a brand new, with warranty, 6-speed transmission from a BMW dealer costs much less than $7,000, then I definitely would not consider a used transmission. I don't want to buy somebody else's junk. I believe there are guys on this chat list that have purchased used Euro 6-speed transmissions and soon afterwards had to spend $2,000+ for rebuilds. I think somebody (Chester?) has suggested using an E46 6-speed transmission rather than an original vintage E36 Euro 6-speed. You might have better luck with a newer transmission but then there was the fitment problem with different sized throw out bearing or something. I get the impression that Ricardo is not a grease monkey who does his own engine rebuilding and doesn't have all of the necessary tools. So Ricardo will have to pay for all of the labor to do this transplant. I don't know what Brazilian auto shop labor rates are and for that matter, I don't know how accessible BMW parts are, but I assume Ricardo will probably have to pay several $1,000's in labor in addition to parts. I think we agree that he will need a new DME regardless whether it has OBDII. I'll still argue it is less expensive for Ricardo to just replace the SMG pump and hope for the best. If he is on his 3rd SMG pump in 8 years, that works out to $2,000 every 4 years. At $500/year, it will take a long time to pay off a $6-10,000 transplant. Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 13:44:13 -0500 From: loweseaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] SMG Help Yeah, I thought of this too. From what "I" understand, BMW took an off-the-shelf transmission and added SMG. Hence, some of the problems we have with the original couple of versions of SMG transmissions. Compare this to what BMW did with the 7-speed SMG in the M5. It was designed from the very beginning for SMG, not manual shifting. In fact, supposedly it would have a gawd-awful shift pattern if you could even shift it manually. So ostensibly, you could "remove" the SMG and be left with a manual shifting transmissions. However, I am sure this would encounter all kinds of little problems too. Probably better just to sell the thing whole and get a non-SMG transmission. Ricardo said he has a 1998 M3. But I think SMG was available in Europe in 1996. Now, SMG might have been discontinued by '98 or '99. I think Great Britian (right hand drive) stop offering SMG E36 M3's before the E36 model ended because of all of the problems and complaints folks had with it. First, if you are concerned about the DME being different, you could check to see which DME you have and post the information. Listers could then see if we have the same DME, or could pull the number from the ETK. Second, I doubt that SMG is tied in. Somebody told me on another list that you couldn't interchange cruise control from earlier models into later models and vice versa, but another lister and I installed the cruise from my '94 325i race car into his '96 M3 street car with no problems. Most of these issues are handled by a separate box, just like the auto transmission computer is separate from the DME, I would think SMG would be the same. I would think that a little time with a wiring diagram (if you have one for your car - I know the Bentley we use in the USA does not included it) would be able to tell you pretty quickly what you are facing.
