#1. Hard Steering Update and F-A help - from Michael, Dave
Top
Date: Wed, 1 Feb 2006 10:32:42 -0500 From: "Michael, Dave" <Dave_Michael@maxtor.com> Subject: Hard Steering Update and F-A help A while ago I posted a note asking about stiff steering and the causes thereof. After some investigation, I found that there are several potential causes. In order of ease of repair: 1. Dirty power steering fluid 2. Plugged p/s filter (in reservoir) 3. Binding, corroded steering column bearing 4. Bad p/s pump 5. Bad rack So I have replaced the fluid reservoir and the hoses that go from/to it and lubed (but did not replace) the bearing. There has been some improvement, but I think the problems are more hydraulic in nature because: 1. With the front wheels in the air and the engine OFF, there USUALLY not much resistance to turning the wheel. 2. With the front wheels in the air and the engine running, the steering is still hard and stiff. 3. With the front wheels in the air and the engine OFF, at the far ends to the rack stroke, the resistance SOMETIMES increases dramatically and there are hydraulicy sounding "squooshing" noises coming from the rack that are accompanied by a blurp of fluid from the reservoir (not even sure how that can happen). So I am guessing leaking seals inside the rack. BUT, there is also the possibility of a bad chack valve in the pump? Anyone have any ideas on how to further diagnose the problem? TIA! #3. Weighing Cars in Bay Area - from dgcrum@jps.net

Date: Wed, 1 Feb 2006 07:41:10 -0800 (GMT-08:00) From: dgcrum@jps.net Subject: Weighing Cars in Bay Area For those in the SF Bay Area that want to weigh their cars, or truck/trailer for that matter, there is a free scale at the following location: http://tinyurl.com/b4ng5 . (Intersection of Robert and Mathew Streets, near the San Jose airport). The scale is open 24/7...during the day you may have to wait in line with the big rigs, but at night you may see race cars being trailered in. :-) Hint: the read-out for the scale is across the street in the window of the trailer. Some data points: my 96 M3 with 1/4 tank fuel, random junk in the trunk and no driver: 3220 lbs. Friend's E46 ZHP (similar load): 3360 lbs, other friend's E46 M3: also 3360 lbs (no sunroof, cloth seats, SMG). I'm assuming the scale's accuracy to be +/- 40 lbs. It was able to detect when I removed my ~20 lb tool kit from the trunk, though. Weigh in! David 96 M3 00 323iT

I found a very detail DIY page with pictures for how to "fix" it by removing the broken gear, adjusting the seat back to your liking and reassembling. I just did this on my wife's 98 M3/4. The downside of this solution is that the seat recline won't work because the gear is not going to be there. Unfortunately I didn't bookmark the page and now I can't find it in my google searching. What I did find, however, is a place that makes a replacement gear for $25. This gear is also plastic tho and will likely fail at some point in the future. I'm working with someone to make a bronze gear, or perhaps delrin, but this website is a good solution if you need one now: http://www.odometergears.com/subpages/bmw.html You'll need the 12 tooth gear (E1). If anyone knows the link to the tutorial I ref'd above, could you please share? Thanks, Mike On 31 Jan 2006 at 11:02, genova, perry wrote: > Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 11:53:19 -0500 > From: "genova, perry" <pgenova@kospharm.com> > Subject: Help: Power sport seat stuck!! > > > Hello grouppe, > > help help! The power sport seat in my M3 lux is stuck in the reclined position. The switch seems to deliver power to the motor as evidenced by the dimming of the lights but the seat back won't raise and the motor isn't running either. It will lower but not raise. #6. speedo making a weird sound - help - from mdriver13@aol.com

Date: Thu, 02 Feb 2006 08:44:41 -0500 From: mdriver13@aol.com Subject: speedo making a weird sound - help Group, Has anyone had this problem. Yesterday after leaving work I started down the road. At about 50mph I start to hear a buzzing sound coming from the instrument cluster. Back down the speed under 50mph, buzz goes away. Back up to 50mph buzz returns, up to 65mph buzz gets louder. Repeated this morning -- same results. Is my speedometer going bad?? If so, what's the fix? This is getting to be a bad winter...first T-stat, now this. regards, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe (sponsored by WCC & JT-Designs) Philly Region SCCA 2005 Philly Region BSP Champion

This will come into play when putting on/removing wheel lug nuts. What is the threshold here? I torque them at 85ft/lbs so would a 110ft/lb impact gun be good enough or is there some sort of power loss (such as 85% efficiency * 110ft/lb etc.). Secondly what is the right torque requirement for these applications (impact gun not the wrench ;) This will be used on my M3 (mandatory content). Thanks in advance. A.L.

Also looking at the replacement ball joints #8033632826 for the front control arm...seems like a better than OEM replacement if the installation is not too hard. Has anyone BTDT? Secondly what is the right > torque requirement for these applications (impact gun not the wrench ;) I've been very happy with my Snap-On impact gun. I got one of the first 12V models, which did a good job with lugs at up to 80 ft-lbs or so. Eventually the batteries wouldn't hold a charge, so I replaced them with 14.4V versions. Still works :-) The latest version I believe is 18V, which is even nicer (I've used a friend's). With a few "braps" of the gun I can get the lug nuts/bolts very close to 80 ft-lbs no problem - takes 1/4 turn or less of the torque wrench to finish it off. Gun takes off the nuts/bolts just fine, no pre-loosening. Get a spare battery, so you'll always have a fully-charged one handy. My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP - *almost* ready for Sears Point :-)
