#4. High Mileage M3 possibly for sale - from Mark D
Top
Date: Fri, 03 Feb 2006 14:08:44 -0500 From: Mark D <mdlkml@atari-source.com> Subject: High Mileage M3 possibly for sale Hey guys, I have a 1996 M3, 5-speed, Arctic Silver, HK stereo, HID headlights, with Black leather and vader seats that I purchased in mint condition at 125,000 miles. Located in Philadelphia, PA. It now has 170,000 miles and is still in nearly flawless condition and runs perfect but it needs RSMs, RTABS, and passenger front control arm bushing, also the radiator has been leaking about an ounce of coolant per month for about a year now out the neck, and it drips a drop or two (literally.. a day) of oil on my garage floor from somewhere. It consumes a respectably average 1 quart of oil a month, and has for as long as I've owned the car. There's roughly $1000-$2000 worth of other work (in parts, DIY work) that would need to be done to make the car truly perfect again and set it up to go another 50,000 miles before something else needs done. I'm thinking about selling it, that is after I test drive a 1999 M3 convertible. If it handles as well as I hope, I'll buy one of those and sell this car, otherwise I'll just keep this car... I love it too much. There's a couple important things to note. Besides a replacement battery, a throttle cable under warranty when the car was brand new, and a small weld on the exhaust manifold, this car has never needed a repair of any sort... Seriously. NOTHING. As a result the entire time I have owned this car it has gotten nothing but the best BMW OEM maintenance parts and lubro-moly full synthetic oil changed at obsessive intervals. The engine doesn't tap unless you really drive her hard in the middle of summer, and even then it's only one single valve that taps, and even then if I hear it tap I immediately stop driving it hard. In fact the last time it did this is when I was romping around Mississippi in 110 degree heat. (Drove it to Mississippi from Pennsylvania for vacation). I was thinking that this car presents a unique opportunity to some people. It presents probably the cheapest possible opportunity to buy an E36 OBD2 M3 that is in a position to be race modified. The engine is older and could be rebuilt. Lots of stuff like control arm bushings, RTABs, etc, would be replaced by a racer with more solid parts anyway. So I thought I'd put it out here for $10,000. I'll get pictures up soon, but the car is beautiful, never driven in snow or salt and is in storage right now. The only problem is the drivers seat is starting to look pretty pathetic despite my maintenance attempts, the leather is just old. The window tint I added seems to have stopped the wear dead in its tracks. If nobody bites at all, I'll assume that people aren't really using good newer E36's as race cars, and will instead make it perfect again as a street car and sell it off that way at around $11,500 through traditional channels. The real reason I want to sell it is because my time is much more important than my money. It makes more sense for me to upgrade to a 1999 E36 with less than 100,000 miles for $10,000 ($20,000 minus my equity) then it would for me to keep this car and have the downtime that the eventual repairs would take. Realistically this car can expect to need sooner or later an engine rebuild (I'd say head gasket since that goes on these engines) @ $2000, exhaust @ $1000, water pump and alternator and suspension at $2000. Realistically this car should cost less than $6000 to get the same life as you would out of a 1999, so it's a better deal financially for someone who wants to own an M3. I also am smitten with the convertible ;) Anyway, if someone wanted to bite they can be sure of: 1. Good owner history, 3 owners in total, 100% HONEST about *everything* (anyone who tells you they never drove a car like this hard is a liar and is doing you a disservice). 2. The highest miles and therefore lowest cost you'll find for the 1996 E36 M3, likely also the best condition for the age and miles anywhere. 3. Full service records from day one. 4. I've had it up on a lift and went over the car with a fine tooth comb. I have a list of every single repair I want to do to achieve my standard of perfection. Very recent pic: http://aoi.atari-source.com/~mduckworth/00043.jpg In the pic, please note that the car is unwashed and undetailed. After being washed and detailed it just glows, especially the wheels. Note the wax on the front trim. That's zymol, applied 6 times per year. 12 people have noted to me that the paint looks brand new. If anyone is seriously interested, there's more to discuss. There's more small problems, there's small body and paint discrepencies and lots of things to talk about. But if you've got the money and you want the car, let me know and we'll talk more. Thanks for tolerating my on-topic spam :) I hope to become a long time contributing member here. Thanks, Mark
