Just got mine. Have not started the project but wondered if anyone had done this and what is involved. I guess there is something in the pan that needs to be moved. (i.e. cut original weld, weld someplace else) Any input would be great. Was also going to do the oil pump nut. Any opinion on either: MIG tack weld nut on or the safety wired nut. -- Bill - 96 M3 red

It was probably under water along with the O2 sensor. It might be corroded. matter of fact if I were you I'd pull every connector you have that was underwater and clean them. you may start being plagued with all sorts of weird electrical problems in the future if those things got wet and they are corroding. Especially any inside the car - they aren't as weatherproof as the exterior ones. Car wanted to stall. So I pulled out of the way until the car figured out what the h*ll it wanted to do :-) It happened as we went from pre-grid down to pit lane to start the race. I stopped at the T12 corner worker there on pit lane. Whether I could have or not, I was NOT going to try to reclaim my grid position ala "I was SEVENTH!" :-) Supposition as to the cause on my part as the car was throwing "O2 sensor" CE lights all weekend. And I had several of those faults post-flooding, but the they didn't re-appear until the race weekend (see other post). Regardless, it's getting fixed this weekend :-) Jim Bassett ************************************************* Please help support the E36M3 list by visiting our sponsors: Bimmerworld http://www.bimmerworld.com Turner Motorsport http://www.turnermotorsport.com Eurosport High Performance http://www.eurosporthighperformance.com Rogue Engineering http://www.rogueengineering.com Treehouse Racing http://www.treehouseracing.com Elephant Motorsports Inc. http://www.elephantmotorsports.com DIGEST INFORMATION: http://www.bmw-m.net/resources/digest_info.htm *************************************************

Loc-Tite the nut and center-punch the exposed screw threads. That way it can come off, with effort, if you ever need to (BTDT). My 2 cents, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - oil pump nut secured as precaution 1993 325is #44 JP - oil pump nut victim, now secure, R&R'd couple of times since

The screw is hardened, so would be a PITA to drill, and there isn't much that protrudes in front of the nut, so it would be a small drill bit. I was just offering an example of what has worked for me. All you have to do is whatever is necessary to keep the nut from backing off - we're not talking seam welding a chassis here. I'm not *against* safety wiring it - it just seemed that was a huge PITA to accomplish with not much added benefit versus other solutions. Of course, you're free to do it however you want. Bimmerworld sells a pre-drilled nut, the safety wire, and an oil pan gasket as a package. Something about deforming the threads on the oil pump just doesn't appeal to me, but as you said whatever works! -Carlos. 98 M3
