#6. Backfire? - from twisty M3

Date: Wed, 15 Feb 2006 13:16:35 -0800 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: Backfire? I noticed this a couple of track weekends in a row, but always forgot about it. Then it occured again last weekend at Willow Springs, and I just happened to remember it now... so I'm asking while it's fresh in my head. ;) It seems that on some rare occassions I have a substantial backfire. Hard to really tell with the helmet on, but I can definitely feel and hear something pretty obvious happening. This only occurs when blipping the throttle for a rev-matched downshift, and doesn't occur all the time, but only when coming off high-speed WOT areas of track (i.e. front straight at Laguna Seca and Willow Springs). As I blip the throttle, the revs don't seem to move, but there's a huge explosion, or so it feels like. Just seems like a backfire, but not something I've ever experienced in this car over the past 6 years until recently. Car itself has about 159K miles, but the motor only has about 59K miles and has the Eurosport OBD2 Cam Kit. The last dyno run showed healthy AFR, although slightly leaner than the original motor. Nothing that looked to be of any concern, though. (I have to look at the dyno plots at home to verify the exact numbers). The only other new symptom as of late has been when sometimes coming out of tight hairpin-type turns where I'll be WOT and it seems to pause slightly before coming up to full power. It's always so brief and at a really not-good time to look at the tach, however, so I can be exact on the RPM range that this occurse, but I believe it to be right around 4-5K rpm. Otherwise, the car pulls hard and feels quite healthy overall. Any input or suggestions as to what to look into would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jonathan L.

It's always so brief Hi Jonathan, I started to experience this slight pause around a tight turn during my autoxing last year. First I thought it was having the gas tank well below a quarter, but later it happened again and I had nearly half a tank. Both times I exited the turns with good speed and then at WOT there was this pause. Just like you said, it's always so brief, that it wasn't until I finished the run and had a minute to reflect that it occurred to me that the car hesitated for an instant. If anything, I think this only happens during very hot weather (90+ degrees). Also, I think it happens to me only on tight left-handers. If you find out the cause, be sure to let me know. Otherwise, like you, the car pulls strong 99% of the time. cheers, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe (sponsored by WCC, JT Designs) Philly Region SCCA 2005 Philly Region BSP Champion

I am, and it's the cam kit software, so I don't know if that might have something to do with it. I never got a chance to take my original motor on track with the cam kit, so I can't compare. It's not an always occuring situation, and I never even thought of it being the software. Hmmm... I originally thought it could be a vanos issue too. If it is software, I suppose it could be related with the backfire situation too. Jonathan << Another thought...are you sharked, like me? Maybe there is a tiny error in the programming.
