#4. Suspension question - RSM's - from Shelhart2@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 25 Feb 2006 07:48:11 EST From: Shelhart2@aol.com Subject: Suspension question - RSM's I replaced the rear suspension (shocks and springs) on my M3 last night with a Dinan stage 1 suspension (Koni - non adjustable). I also installed Rogue Engineering RSM's. By the way, this is a 2004 and I know this isn't an E46 list. The other list serves don't have the quality of people :) My question is: The stock suspension had a convex washer that faced down towards the bump stop and then the shock mount came next, etc.. When replacing with the new RSM's I left it on and used the flat washer Rogue gave me and then installed the new RSM over both washers. It seems logical to use the large stock convex washer / bump stop in addition to the new small washer when installing. The only issue is that with the convex washer I can't use a deep well socket to tighten the nuts down from under the car. I need to use an open ended wrench. Not a real issue just currious if I did it correctly. Am I correct? Shel Hart

#5. rebuild questions - from gary.preece@insightbb.com

Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 02:10:00 +0000 From: gary.preece@insightbb.com Subject: rebuild questions Hey Guys, Looking at rebuilding a 95 M3 with nearly 200k on it. The head gasket is leaking and needs to be done, so I am deciding on what else needs to be done while in there. I am thinking: - clutch, pressure plate etc. (which?) have stock now, but what if supercharging later - hoses - motor mounts - injectors (cleaned or new?) - power steering resevoir - radiator, t-stat, water pump - fix 5th gear detent on tranny What about a cam kit vs supercharger and what other changes or additions should be included with either of these? I have a lightweight flywheel, K&N intake, Supersprint exhaust and Jim C. chip already. Would like to hit some driving schools down the road, but it is not very dependable at the moment. Should I go ahead and put in a new alternator and starter? No probs yet with these, but... Thanks. Gary Lou., KY

Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 02:16:46 +0000 From: gary.preece@insightbb.com Subject: new seat ?'s Hey again, Need a new seat for a 95 M3. Anyone know of any place around Louisville, KY that has some demos? Any suggestions on best mounts that slide and seats to try? Will need access to back seat. My current seat is shot, but may consider rebuilding if price is not ridiculous. Thanks. Gary

#7. Debugging a CEL code - from ajvdh1@comcast.net

Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 04:15:57 +0000 From: ajvdh1@comcast.net Subject: Debugging a CEL code Last Sunday, I got my 95 M3 back on the road after a bunch of work. I drove if a few times this week, and everything was OK, until yesterday. I got into the boost, and heard some whistling, as if there was a leak in the intake. A couple of minutes later, the CEL came on and it started running like crap. I managed to nurse it the mile or so to home. When I did the stomp test, I got 1221 (O2 sensor 1) over and over, yet my A/F meter, which is hooked to the O2 sensor was reading OK. I disconnected the battery for an hour, and ran a stomp test. Now instead of 1221, I get 1281 (DME control module memory supply), and it still barely runs. I figure my next step is to hook a meter to the DME plug, and make sure voltage is getting to all the inputs. If anyone has any other ideas (relays to check, etc.) I'd appreciate hearing them. Some background: It has 77,000 miles, and a modified Mechtech turbo kit (relocated MAF and bigger injectors instead of the rising rate fuel regulator. I have an HKS S-AFC and an A/F gauge plumbed into the harness, and those connections look OK, but I'm certainly going to double check them. The "bunch of work" above was having Bimmerhaus pull the head 'cause I managed to snap an exhaust manifold stud, and couldn't extract it with the head on the car. - Alain -- "You can't buff out a tree." Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 08:51:10 -0500 From: Walter J <m3gtr@adelphia.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] rebuild questions Gary: I'd be wary of plunking a rebuilt head atop a short block wth 200k on it nevermind the addition of a supercharger. You are going to be making those old pistons/rings/rods/bearings take the load of a brand new engine - something they havent had to do in a looong time. Once you have gone to the expense of making the head new again you have spent 80% of a total rebuild so at that mileage you might as well keep on going or just source fresh motor. -- Walter gary.preece@insightbb.com wrote: >Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 02:10:00 +0000 >From: gary.preece@insightbb.com >Subject: rebuild questions > > >Hey Guys, > >Looking at rebuilding a 95 M3 with nearly 200k on it. Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 09:17:14 -0500 From: "Jack - Elephant Motorsports" <jack@elephantmotorsports.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] rebuild questions Gary, With 200k on it if you're considering doing upgrades beyond regular replacement items I would definitely do the bottom end as well. Only doing the top end could very likely lead to troubles soon after (unless just regular stock top end work). Extra load and all... Besides, if you're willing to spend that much $$$ you might as well do it 100% instead of 50%...it'll cost more later anyway. ; ) It seems like you were looking at that anyway but just words of caution. Is there any particular reason to do all the performance stuff like cams and all? The reason I ask is that the car has a lot of potential even in stock form. Adding a LTW flywheel and a few other minor bolt on items will pump it up a bit and you'll still have a nice package you can always add on to later. Just my $0.02 though. As for parts....I would certainly do anything of maintenance such as the entire cooling system (unless the rad is new already). Certainly all hoses. I would have the injectors cleaned, you don't need new ones unless the shop doing the cleaning recommends it. Is there a particular reason to replace the steering reservoir? If it's leaking you can do the hoses. Course the reservoir is cheap so I guess there's not a major argument against it if you do the hoses anyway. Definitely mounts (motor/trans, others if they're original), clutch (stay stock or similar for now), shifter parts (good time for a short shift kit if you like but do the stock parts otherwise), driveline bushings (flex disc, center bearing, etc)... I am about to embark on the same project in a customers DE car (although he already has a fresh motor we're swapping in) so there's plenty to do, especially if you're planning on DE's soon after. Suspension components all need to be fresh, especially if original or well used. The parts will add up quick, who are you paying to do the motor or are you doing that yourself? Set a budget and then you can think about upgrades but I'd still recommend stock if you're gonna do schools and have not done one yet, you don't need more car. Hope this helps. Cheers. #10. Brake Caliper Pistons - from david kroth
Top
Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 06:39:46 -0800 (PST) From: david kroth <david_kroth@yahoo.com> Subject: Brake Caliper Pistons Right rear caliper was dragging a little for the past couple weeks. Got a rebuild kit and took it apart yesterday. The dust boot was unseated about 1/3 of the way around and it apparently let some moisture in resulting in a small rust spot on the smooth portion of the piston. I cleaned it up and put the kit on, but I'm going to have to replace the caliper when I put new pads on later in the spring. When the piston is pushed all the way in to accommodate the new pads the rust spot will be right on top of the main seal. Not safe. Worldpac doesn't list M3 rear calipers. I've got an email out to BimmerWorld. Anyone have a source for just the piston? Dealer is gonna be pricy for a rebuilt/new caliper.
