#3. Caliper Pistons - from Burgess, Kim L

Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2006 11:43:35 -0800 From: "Burgess, Kim L" <kim.l.burgess@boeing.com> Subject: Caliper Pistons I looked into this issue a couple months back and as I recall the values for thermal conduction or btu/hr/sqr ft are: @ 400 deg low carbon steel is 26.8 dropping to 25.5 @ 600 deg @ 400 deg 304 CRES is 10.9 increasing to 11.8 @ 600 deg So heat transfer is about half the btu/hr/sqr ft. For me the real benefit is that I get to replace my pitted and corroded front pistons and rebuild my rears this year out fear of corrosion and simply replace them too with CRES. Not all CRES is created equal and some alloys are less prone to corrosion than others, but they should be better than my pitted chrome-plated mild steel pistons that I have now. As far as trading one problem for another proper pad selection has always been important and will continue to be so for me, as will refinement of braking technique to minimize heat cycle periods. I don't believe the factory intended for the piston to be a heat sink, if they had more surface area would be in contact with the backing plate and the piston would be solid. The pistons for the front are roughly 2.3250 in diameter, I can forward a drawing onto anyone who wishes to have it. I created it recently for the same project. Kim Burgess

Date: Wed, 1 Mar 2006 14:06:51 -0600 From: "Jamie Howton" <jhowton@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] RE: Caliper Pistons I do know a fair amount about metal since I am in the manufacturing business (www.fotofab.com) however any sort of analysis of the difference between stock pistons and new pistons will depend entirely upon knowing which particular alloys were used to manufacture each type. Speculation about which is better or worse in terms of CTE(Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) or wear is mostly a waste of time without that specific knowledge. That being said he wear properties of either piston are going to depend largely upon the surface finish and hardness of the piston. The CTE depends entirely upon the material alloy used to manufacture it. There is little doubt however, that the stock pistons were manufactured from some type of ferrous alloy with low corrosion resistance but relatively high hardness. Any replacement pistons manufactured from stainless steel will perform better from a corrosion resistance standpoint than if made from steels with less or no chromium content. In general, I agree that the wear proprties of the piston will have very little impact on their perfomance because the rubber seals will wear before the piston. I would be worried, however, that if the replacements are not finished to a specification equal to or better than the stock pistons they will wear out the rubber seals more quickly than stock.
