On a nice hot sunny day, magnetics will stay on at 130mph+ On a very cold overcast day, magentics may fly off at 30mph. Either way, if water gets behind the magnetics and the sun comes out, it will heat up the moisture so much that I have seen instances where it discoloured the clearcoar/paint under the magnet. Nice artsy fartsy effect, but probably not what you are looking for. Graeme

Sure things can be dependent on other factors.. Even the rolls of magnetic themselves differ in their magnetic ability. But regardless, they are only rated for 60ish. If you got 130mph, you got a bonus. No one producing them would warrant it for that high a speed unless theyre using a magnetic material the rest aren't. Basically, what Marco said :-) As a data point, I have similar numbers in the gauged 325is: 50-55 psi at idle on initial startup, dropping to 15-17 psi at idle once the oil is warmed up. IIRC, 55 psi or so is warmed-up WOT pressure. > I'm also curious about the temperatures. a couple days ago the oil temp > gauge was showing about 85 degrees but the water temp gauge was already at > 12 o'clock. The stock gauge has a wide range for "normal", so it could conceivably be at the 12 o'clock position for the whole range of 85-100. And yes, Marco, those would have to be Celcius, as 100C = 212F (which seems like a typical water temp) :-) > I don't know why I expect the oil to get hotter faster > than the water. Date: Fri, 3 Mar 2006 10:20:32 -0800 From: "Som Naderi" <som@dimensionracing.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] Nominal oiil temperature and oil pressure... Actually, it was Fahrenheit. The car was still cold... it was warming up. The needle had just hit 12 o'clock when the gauge read 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The gauge continued to the high one-hundreds (around 180-190) while the water gauge didn't move (which sounds right, given that it sticks at 12 o'clock throughout a whole range). Cool... so the oil pressure is normal around that range. Any suggestion as to what I should set the low pressure alarm to? I figure I'll set it to 13 for the street. What about a good track number? I figure while I'm pushing it it'll probably stay above 30 or so... I'll push the car around a bit and pay attention to the numbers, I guess... anyone else do this? Oh, and thanks Marco & Jim... feel much better about the install now. :) - Som -----Original Message----- From: Jim Bassett [mailto:jim@jimbassett.com] Sent: Friday, March 03, 2006 10:01 AM To: Som Naderi Cc: E36M3 Subject: Re: [E36M3] Nominal oiil temperature and oil pressure... You want some warning before it possibly drops to zero. I believe my warning light is set to turn on at around 15 psi. Hasn't come on on the track, except once or twice cresting T5 at THill (Cyclone) when I haven't gotten back on the throttle early enough. (And if that's not a set-up for MarkD's story, I'm not sure what is <BFG>.) Jim Bassett
