It takes quite a tug to get the knob off and you have to be careful not to bop yourself in the head when in comes loose. On the two I've had to replace (M3 and 540i) the knobs were easily removable and I didn't see anyway to fix them. The plastic inside looked cracked or broken and just wouldn't hold. New knobs fixed 'em right up. marty Steve Sharp wrote: >Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2006 15:33:19 -0800 >From: "Steve Sharp" <steve.sharp@xilinx.com> >Subject: shift knob loose (or is it?) > >I need some opinions (which I know this list is not lacking). > >My shift knob seems to come loose very easily. Thanks Dave, I'm really leaning toward the UUC kit, but I'm hung up on Stage I vs Stage II with OEM M5 clutch. Which one did you get? I certainly do not want to put a used clutch in there, I just need to stay under a kilo-dollar. Thanks for the offer though. The slave cylinder upgrade you refer to; is that the removal of the clutch delay valve? Have you made sure it's snapped into place? I replaced the knob in my 95 M3 with a lighted one, and never even realized that the knob "snapped" at the bottom. I just thought it was a straight friction fit. When I removed the old one, I just kept pulling, and when it popped off I assumed it just "broke loose," I didn't know it was actually snapped in. Apparently my new lighted knob didn't make an obvious snap when it went in either... but on my M Coupe now, when I went to replace the knob after a boot change (again I didn't realize it was anything but a simple friction fit), the knob made an audible click when it went back into place. So if you've just tried sliding it on, try giving it a bit of a hit fron the top and see if it snaps into place. - reid

It's worth whatever somebody will pay for it. Heck one of our chapter members got one new for $32K back in 1997. A lot of these cars sat around dealerships starting in '96. Who would want a $50K M3 with no a/c and no radio? At the time the regular 95 M3 was $40K. One of the mags tested these (I know mags are not anything to really go by but amusing nonetheless) and the LTW they had was actually slower than the 95 M3 they tested it against. D'oh! Yes now we all know they are actually faster. :-) I'd take one, I've always liked them, not 32K like tho, buy a cheap white 95 m3 and make a faux LTW! -Carlos.
