Gary, when the symptoms happen again, go to the gas cap and immediately turn it loose and listen. If you hear any air rushing in, you could have a situation where the gas tank breather system is clogged or the vacuum line is not opening the valve. It tends to act like a fuel vapor lock in old carb engines. Another way to verify that the fuel tank is not breathing is to look underneath at the fuel cell and see if it is being sucked in on itself. Just something to check if it seems like a fuel starvation problem. Regards, Frank

Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2006 13:25:22 -0600 From: "Jamie Howton" <jhowton@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] check coolant message I solved my persistant check coolant message today. On my car it was electrical in nature. The contacts in the connector must not have been making contact with the pins on the sensor. I took the connector apart, there are three little plastic clips that hold the two halves of the connector housing together, I used a dental pick to pry them back one at a time while applying pressure to the connector halves with my thumb. There are two rubber "plugs" encasing the contacts inside that which are moulded onto the wires. I used a crimping tool to squeeze the cylindrical contacts through the rubber housing, just enough to deform them slightly; plugged everything back in and no more error message. It took less than 5 minutes. Just make sure that you don't squash the contacts too much because I can't imagine that this connector is available through BMW without having to buy the entire harness it is attached to. If so, they're available as replacement wiring from the dealer. The other connector in the picture is a replacement connector for my turn signal side marker light wiring, which one of the POs of my car had butchered by crimping on some weird rubber sockets for "blue" bulbs. The socket doesn't even fit into the side marker housing, it just sits loose in the hole. Two of those molded wire sockets plug into that connector and the black part snaps into place holding them tight. Pretty nifty setup. Anyway, that wire with the molded connector is available under 61 13 0 007 441 CABLE SOCKET $3.18 list. The wire on each one is about 1.5feet long. The plastic wire snap thing is 61 13 1 378 402 7-PLUG TERMINAL $1.00 list at my dealer. I have the mounts unbolted from the chassis, but now I need to remove them from the arms so I can have the bushings pressed out. Is there any special trick to removing the bushings from the conntrol arms? Thanks, -lee

#10. rear subframe mounts - from Stan Shaw
Top
Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2006 12:28:16 -0500 From: "Stan Shaw" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: rear subframe mounts I have been hearing a rattle in the rear of my '96 M3 during shifts. Upper shock mounts were changed once to JTDs, so those are less likely. I wondered about the rear subframe issues others have had, so decide I would check it out. Maybe I am missing something, but my mounts look fine. I would see any cracking where the two bolts on the sides of the differential mount to the rear subframe, right? 160k miles on this M3, and most things people complain of I haven't seen. Maybe I am just lucky? P.S. Happy to be a grandfather on 3/15/06 at the ripe old age of 48. I already started discussing the merits of 928s and M3s to my granddaughter, she seems undecided so far.
