I am currently running an intake and an exhaust along with the Dinan Stage 1 software. Prior to my purchase, the Dinan tech told me that all what Stage 2 does is makes the car run slightly rich (with no real world HP difference). Its not necessarily to run Stage 2 and therefore I stuck with Stage 1. I have tracked my car for almost a year without any issues. FYI Conforti injector can be used with or without an intake, just to give you an idea. Your Stage 1 software is good enough; no need to upgrade unless the itch to modify just because is absolutely severe. It is especially tempting with Dinan's Spring sale going on until 3/31/2006. Anyone on the list with this setup? Does yours include the fuel pressure regulator? I used to have the same setup (intake, exhaust, stage II software) in my E36 325i, but don't recall if I had an FPR or not. How important do you think this is? I would think our stock injectors would be able to handle a slight increase in flow. I was hoping for some end-user feedback before I call Dinan and talk to them about it. Thanks in advance! Ahmad, Thats the kind of information I was hoping to get. Thanks. It seems to me that there would be power to gain from those mods with a remapped AFR, but is it just that the stock ECU is competent enough to handle this itself? I was under the impression that the Stage I software just raised the rev limited and eliminated the top speed governor, and really didn't remap to make more horsepower. I always thought it was the Stage II software, with the exhaust and intake, that gave Dinan's claimed 20 crank horsepower. Regardless, I'd like to hear more thoughts. I left a message with a Dinan rep, so I can get his take also. Thanks again! Drive Safely, Raza

#5. AS Short Shifter and vibrations - from Peter Fry

Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2006 21:23:16 -0700 From: "Peter Fry" <PeterFry@aol.com> Subject: AS Short Shifter and vibrations Tom, Marco, Dave and Dave- I guess I'm the newest member of the AutoSolutions vibration club. I JUST had the "ultra" (complete) kit put on my 99 M3 when it was in the shop for Bilstein shocks at 81K this week. So far, I've driven about an hour in it. Love the shifting feel. Could feel more vibration in the shifter, but that's okay - I don't need to rest my hand on the knob when I'm not shifting. I was also a little surprised by the audible vibration. On my car, it seems worst in 3rd gear, between 3-4k rpm, or when off-throttle, such as downshifting or "coasting." I don't mind a little vibration & noise, but sometimes there's an audible clicking rattle from the shift KNOB itself. Since mine's a 99, the shift knob is lighted (which I think is cool). I'm wondering if some of the internals (bulb housing, bulb...) are rattling, or there's something else that wasn't tightened down right. I don't have the lighted flywheel like Dave. Vibration and a little gear noise, I can live with - this clicking rattle... ugh. Anybody else (with or without a lighted knob) have this vibration sound? It's the cat's pajamas in terms of feel, force required and certainty of shifts. But it does introduce new vibrations, which I believe are magnified by the ltw flywheel. Off-throttle is the worst. It also vibrates at low rpm acceleration. I'd LOVE one of these on the race car, and I like it enough on the street car that I overlook the noise/vibrations. But if I weren't so wowed with how it shifted, I could even be miffed about the NVH. I've installed UUCs on a couple of cars including our prior 528i and my current M3 and never noticed a noise increase. Unfortunatly its a bit out of character on an E39. I don't recall all the other noises you mention, just more gear noise. Sounds to me like, in your case, the mechanic didn't get the rubber boot that seals against the transmission tunnel engaged all the way. It's a pain in the neck and I can see where a mechanic on the clock wouldn't bother. The main mechanical difference is that the A/S shifter replaces the entire rod and the part that attaches to the transmission where the UUC uses the original one. Obviously A/S takes something out of the damping, my guess is that the hunk of foam up in there is made of stiffer material. Feels very solid and precise and short (although I went with the 25-30% reduction, not the 40% kit). However, I am noticing some different sounds than before, stuff that might be normal (?) after installing a kit. I definitely hear the starter a bit louder and the gearbox whine a bit more. The sounds are coming from the front of the console area, ahead of (toward the front of the car from) the shifter itself, and underneath the console. On quick inspection, the two levels of insulation/rubber isolation dampers around the shift lever appear intact. Any thoughts? Is this to be expected? It isn't obnoxious, just different from what I was used to hearing. Regards, Tom Yee 97 M3/4 88 M3
