I stopped and grabbed some 16ga strips of steel and some man-sized rivets. I ran a "strap" to each of the front seat bolt mounts and overlapped them in the middle - drilled and riveted the extinguisher mount to the straps so it sat under the front seat just like the factory one. $26... total, 20 minutes of measuring and drilling holes... done. -- Walter

You will not see more gains until you upgrade on a better flowing unit. Infact throw in a stock 96+ exhaust and you can improve exhaust efficiency. Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2006 10:20:36 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Re: Lack of performance improvement This may seem like a quibble, but the thread so far hasn't discussed "lack of performance improvement" at all, but rather lack of measured hp gain. And others have pointed out the difficulties in getting reliable and repeatable hp readings. Presumably performance is what we're really looking for, and hp is just one way of getting that (reduced weight would be another). My car is extensively - or is that expensively? - modified, but has never been dyno'd. Partly this is for lack of a suitable facility where I am, but also because I'm too cheap to have repeated dyno pulls done. Therefore when I started doing upgrades to the M3 many years ago I decided to measure actual performance. On a suitable road near my house - err, I mean my private test track, yeah, that's it! - I measured acceleration in third gear from 2K to 6.5K rpm, with a split time at 4K so that I could check any different effects at high or low rpm. Using third gear eliminated gear changing variables and made the times long enough to measure by hand. Enough runs were taken in each direction that I could toss the slowest and quickest results and arrive at a reasonably consistent set of times. In fact after some practice my times became quite consistent overall. Using this method I was able to determine a useful performance increase from installing just the Conforti software, and more later from the Eurosport CAI and software upgrade. This was a number of years ago and before many later upgrades, but the methodology is still valid. No idea about the hp, but the performance increase was verifiable. Neil 96 M3

Correct. You could run MTL in the trans, but it'll be even rougher/notchier than the D4 ATF when cold, I think. > More importantly, on the late (1999 M3 trans, etc) transmissions, it says > something like BMW long life fluid... You probably could run MTL, just be aware of the cold/notchy thing :-) Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - Red Line D4 ATF, not too bad when cold 1993 325is #44 JP - Red Line MTL, very notchy when cold :-)
