Get some used cam caps, and machine down the area where the nuts go -- remove around 6-8mm. Then, you replace a normal cap with one of these caps, and then slowly unscrew the nuts. The cam caps are not dowel-pin aligned (like they are on, say, an Alfa DOHC motor). So in theory they won't go back exactly the way they came out ... but in practice I don't think anyone cares -- just lube the cam bearings well as you tighten them up. You will need a cam timing / alignment tool -- I bought one for myself off eBay. Good thing, as I had to R&R the head three times due to a blown head gasket, a bad head gasket, and my own stupidity, in that order. About half of my cam caps had noticeable scoring -- I even found some aluminum shavings in the oil feed holes. I think the factory simply didn't clean the the parts properly before reassembly. I cleaned mine up a bit and re-used them. Motor runs great. I got the used caps (the ones I machined) from a friendly mechanic. --Andrew >On Friday 31 March 2006 4:55 pm, you wrote: >> Get some used cam caps, and machine down the area where the nuts go >> -- remove around 6-8mm. >> >> Then, you replace a normal cap with one of these caps, and then >> slowly unscrew the nuts. #6. Need rear diff cover - from Gary Preece

Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2006 15:38:59 -0500 From: "Gary Preece" <gary.preece@insightbb.com> Subject: Need rear diff cover Hey Guys, Anyone have a line on a used or new rear diff cover for a 95 M3? Build date 10/94. Mine cracked around the neck where the drain plug goes. I could understand if I were tightening it too much, but I was loosening it when it happened. It was already leaking a little, for some reason, but it is now dripping. I may have to go to the dealer and order one on Monday...I am afraid my car is getting too old to work on any more. I am constantly replacing things!! Gary Lou., KY

Date: Sat, 1 Apr 2006 18:21:22 -0800 From: Dave Thomas <dave@sasdatalink.com> Subject: replacing knock sensors...any 'while your in there' items? I have a bad knock sensor so I am getting together all the parts I need to remove the intake manifold so I can replace the sensors. They are only $50 each so I am going to replace them both. Any other items to replace while the intake is off? Thanks, Dave T.
