#1. RE: [E36M3] hoses - from Mike Frank

I thought about pretty blue Samco hoses, but decided to put the money elsewhere, mainly because the stock hoses lasted 9 years & 75k miles (plenty of track use) with no problems. At ~$15/ea. they're cheap; and you could go through several before reaching Samco money (probably won't though). FYI, all of the original hoses looked to be in pretty good shape. Regarding the hose from the bottom of the expansion tank to the heater return pipe on the D/S of the engine by the P/S fluid reservoir, I wouldn't bother with an "upgraded" hose. Both dealers I talked to didn't stock them because they never use them. You can get a pretty good idea what parts fail by what you're dealer stocks. :) Also, if you've seen this hose, the way it snakes behind the radiator and through the fan shroud, I would bet that any aftermarket replacement wouldn't fit properly. I imagine BMW beat up their supplier a little bit to get this one just right. Nothing fits like factory. #2. RE: Stock Exhaust Question - from Ahmad Lutfeali

Date: Tue, 4 Apr 2006 09:58:08 -0400 From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Subject: RE: Stock Exhaust Question Frank, I would personally put in a stock exhaust (this is my opinion). I see that you have a 95 M3, however, given the opportunity, I would put in a 96+ exhaust and stay away from either the 95 or the 325/328 exhaust as you will lose power. According to Rogue's Website: A common misconception with E36 M3 owners is that upgrading the factory cat-back muffler with an aftermarket system will provide tremendous performance gains. When upgrading an exhaust system on a 1995 M3, pay particular attention to the size of the inlet tubing. If you get an exhaust with at least a 2-1/4" inlet tubes, you will be gaining flow. Any smaller you will not be benefiting the car dramatically. The stock exhaust system from a 95 M3 weighs 45 lbs. In 1996, BMW improved the exhaust on the M3 by increasing the inlet tubing size to nearly 60mm. Even for a 1995 M3 owner, upgrading to a 1996-99 M3 exhaust will give you more flow without increases in sound. The stock exhaust system from a 96-99 M3 weighs 49 lbs. Many aftermarket cat-back exhaust systems promise more sound, which is easy since most do not have the size/volume of the factory system. Thus, they have the ability to dampen less sound. However, pay particular attention to the inlet tubing size to ensure that you're not trading sound for flow. Weights of aftermarket exhaust systems can vary from 25-35 lbs. Granted, all are lighter than stock, but not all are created equally. -------------------- 10 -------------------- Date: Tue, 04 Apr 2006 09:33:25 -0400 From: Walter J <m3gtr@adelphia.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Stock Exhaust Question Frank: Where are you located? I have a factory cat back that came off my 98 M3 at 50k miles in very nice shape that is officially "in my way". If you are anywhere near northeast PA or southeast PA such that I don't need to figure out how to ship this awkward thing to an eBay user I'd be happy to insure that it is a cheaper solution than an ANSA muffler ;) As far as your real question... the non-M E36 guys see the M3 pipes as an upgrade and need to make some kind of "adjustment" to hang them so there is a difference - I do not think you would want to put a 325 exhaust on your M3. -- Walter FranKirsten wrote: >Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2006 21:38:23 -0700 >From: "FranKirsten" <frankirsten@msn.com> >Subject: Stock Exhaust Question > >I need to get my exhaust back to stock form on my 1995 M3. You are claiming you want to upgrade so you are going to Samco, my opinion is, the OE hoses are your best bet for fit and durability. So, I would say the Samco are a downgrade. I can't say this about the radiators, but I feel good about saying it with respect to the hoses. Regards, Rich

#5. Fuel Starvation Stage II Kit - from Lawrence Barbieri

Date: Tue, 4 Apr 2006 17:16:12 -0400 From: "Lawrence Barbieri" <larry@logicalconclusions.com> Subject: Fuel Starvation Stage II Kit Greetings All, I just received my Stage II Fuel Starvation kit from Bimmerworld. Has anyone here installed this kit? I read the installation instructions 4 or 5 times last night and I believe there are some errors in there that make it a bit confusing. First, it says to run the large diameter hose between the 2 pumps. Well, that hose is only 6" long so it's not likely to reach. I think that should be the small diameter hose, which is about 3' long. There are 3 up adapters included that are brass barb connectors screwed together to go from the 8mm hose to the 12mm hose. Do I need to be concerned about leaking at the threads of those adapters? If I need to put something on them (like teflon tape, although that probably won't stand up to gasoline) what might that substance be? Near the end it says to splice the pigtail connector in using the supplied splice connectors. Ummmm....no connectors found in the kit and the parts list at the beginning of the instructions doesn't state that there are any included. Not a big deal, because I will be using a Posi-Lock Tap connector for this, but still.... At any rate. If someone has done this recently and has any insight or helpful tips I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks! Larry -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. My wife is looking at vehicles and I would rather her go down this route vs something else from Audi or VW... I require it to be a manual transmission and a non-luxury interior. Preferences include a black interior with exterior colors white, black,or silver. Of course I would look at others as well but she might not.. =-) Low mileage is not terribly important but clean cars with no body work and as little as possible done to them will find a premium waiting for them. Location of the vehicle not important but of as expected the closer to me the better. A southern CA vehicle will be looked at before a vehicle from NY. Standard finders fee of $250 or negotiable based on how nice of a vehicle it truly is.. Thanks for the help! George Trilikis San Diego, CA

#10. What not to do with Ti backing plates. - from William Townsend
Top
Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2006 10:29:19 -0400 From: "William Townsend" <wtownsend@juniper.net> Subject: What not to do with Ti backing plates. Had a brain out today. Put new front rotors, hawk ht-14 pads and my new Ti backing plates in. All went in fine no shoving or forcing. Drive the car out for a test drive. In just a matter of a few hundred feet it feels like the front brakes are on. Oooops, forgot that the Ti plates should not be installed until the pads have worn off at least 1mm!! Turned around, now smoke coming out of the wheel wells, get in the garage, get a fan to cool them off, jack it up and forcefully rotate the front wheels so the rotor and pad don't fuse together. Remove plates and reassemble. (all the while expelling finely crafted expletives!) Don't do this, wait till the pads have worn a little. Even though all slid into place very nicely, thermal expansion is what gets you! --Bill 96 M3 red
