#1. New BMWs - from Matthew Teel

Date: Wed, 05 Apr 2006 21:46:33 -0800 From: Matthew Teel <mteel@beluga.com> Subject: New BMWs Speaking of new Bimmers... I was at the dealer today and they mentioned that the new M5 (there was one on the floor) didn't have a dip-stick for checking oil, but relied on a sensor, and that was true for other new BMWs (I'm not clear on the models that have this "feature"). What's interesting is that they've already had a handful of sensors go bad and register a low oil light. The only way to check the actual level is to drain all the oil from the engine. I believe it was Einstein who said something like "Things should only be as complicated as necessary to function properly, and no more". I'm sure I slaughtered the quote, but you get the idea. I just think the new BMWs are too complicated. It's like our Bosch dishwasher. It works great when it works, but I've spent nearly double the price of the machine in repairs over the last 6 years, not to mention the warranty work that was completed. I just don't find the new cars very appealing.

My wife is looking at vehicles and I would rather her go down this route vs something else from Audi or VW.... I require it to be a manual transmission and a non-luxury interior. Preferences include a black interior with exterior colors white, black,or silver. Of course I would look at others as well but she might not.. =-) <snip> Thanks for the help! Until the new MZ4 Coupe made it's first appearance. That's about the only new model that has me thinking the way I was when the E36M3 thoughts were running through my head many years ago. I can even overlook the funny nose and "flat" interior look (I still love the E36 interior, even if it is dated). MZ4 Coupe is on my very short list of appealing cars coming available soon... at least that fall into the somewhat realistic list (although it'll take a lot of inner debate to justify $50K+). Donations are now being accepted. ;) Jonathan L.

Has anyone experienced anything like this or any ideas? If it was > a burnt bulb, I would have expected losing a section in both the scales. And the illumination wouldn't magically return, either :-) Yep, I've had similar instances of dark spots on the cluster, only to have them be re-illuminated sometime later. Some aspect of the light routing, either the tubes or how they're attached to the cluster face gets obscured or dim for some reason (temperature? vibration? age?). It'll be obvious if one of the general illumination bulbs gets burnt out, a whole section of the cluster will go dark. There are only 3 or so of these general illumination bulbs, so a huge section will be affected. Otherwise, just one of the "E36 quirks", I guess :-) Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP

My mom's 528e had a spider's nest/cocoon sitting at the bottom of the instrument cluster for years. Those little critters can squeeze through the smallest of spaces. -zs

I have driven E60s and E90s, and they are great drivers, they are just plain old ugly and I just can't do it. Regards -- Jamie Howton 2000 M5 1995 M3 Hampshire, IL
