Interiors, with the exception of rear seats and the panels affected by the installation of the roll cage, must be intact. A passenger seat is required. The passenger seat must either be a stock seat or meet the same requirements as the driver's seat. Headliners must remain in place. I would read this to say on a stock class car, the sunroof mechanism has to stay in place. IE - it is not stated that it can be removed. And further for prepared class: 7. Body/Chassis/Interior C. Interior may be removed, except dash and door panels, providing the car "conforms to the spirit" of the BMW CCA Club Racing Program, i.e., it is aesthetically pleasing. <snip> D. The "interior" is defined to include carpeting, seats, headliner, sounddeadening materials, trim panels, console, entertainment and navigation systems, speakers, sun visors, door mechanisms and the sunroof mechanism. If the sunroof mechanism is removed, the panel must either be securely sealed (bolted/welded/bonded) or secured in place with two retaining straps 1 inch wide and extending 3 inches beyond the sunroof opening on each side. The panel must be flush with the roofline. The sunroof panel must be of the same materials as originally manufactured in Prepared. If the original panel was made of glass, an alternate panel of metal must be installed. So, again - it looks like you are stuck with the entire sunroof assembly as installed in your car from the factory. -Tom >>> "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> 4/11/2006 11:04:35 am >>> Tom, It says I need to keep the head liner in place. My current cassette is broken and the sunroof flaps around. I had to put a racer's tape around the outside to make it not rattle/whistle at high speeds. I was thinking about removing the gunk up to and welding the damn thing shut. And for the weight loss, throw in a "Cool Suit" instead ;) Ahmad From: Tom Melton [mailto:Tom.Melton@emoryhealthcare.org] Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 10:49 AM To: E36M3@bmw-m.net; Ahmad Lutfeali Subject: Re: [E36M3] Sunroof Weight? Ahmad, I have the cassette (complete) in the basement, I can weigh it. The only thing missing from the assembly is the metal outer skin. I think the metal skin was 3-5 pounds, but you would have to keep that anyway... Is removing the sunroof assembly legal in stock? I would think not, but have not read the rules for that item. -Tom >>> "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> 4/11/2006 10:30:29 am >>> Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2006 10:21:35 -0400 From: "Ahmad Lutfeali" <m3_racer99@hotmail.com> Subject: Sunroof Weight? Since we are discussing weight loss here, Does anyone know how much the entire sunroof assembly weigh? For a credible source I have heard the cassette is about 3-4 lbs and the motor being about a pound or two. Back when the Bimmerforums 'search' was working, I had seen people post its worth about 40lbs total. At present the sunroof is not functional in my car (broken cassette) and if I could remove the darn weight that high, I would. The problem is, I would have to remove the cage to do it PITA :( If its only a couple of pounds, I may not bother. Anyone else with some feedback on sunroof weight? (mine is a 1998 model). Did you include the seat belt receptacles and the hardware with them? That's another couple pounds anyway. Plus the "T" pieces that the folding seat backs connect to are easily removable. Between all the loose hardware and seat belt stuff (not attached to the seats), that's another 4-5 lbs for sure. I just removed all of this stuff from a customer car, a good weight savings for sure! Well, I strongly disagree, and I have first-hand experience. I too tried to save money with Meyle tie rods. I bought two complete sets. Both failed quickly, one set within 8k miles and the other within 12k miles, and this was simply street miles on an E30 with 95% of the miles highway. That is pathetic. I could be handed free new Meyle parts and I wouldn't install them on any of my cars or my friends' cars and would be further ahead selling them on eBay to some unsuspecting sucker. ;-) But I wouldn't do that since Meyle is junk. There is no question that I would only use Lemforder for all suspension components. Regards, Rich

Ahmad, I would agree with the number but where did you get that info? I disagree that the front should be lower than the rear. I looked up the ride heights on the Bentley as my roommate's E36 that I borrowed for an event at Mid-Ohio had the front lower than the rear so I just wanted to confirm that the front is always supposed to be *higher* than the rear. The figures in the Bentley are in mm but I would agree that approx. ..75 inches in rake is about the right number. His car was on coilovers in the front and was poorly adjusted by a shop here in Detroit and had the front adjusted way too low compared to the rear ride height. -Carlos.

We removed the sunroof on a friend's E36 325i race car a few weeks ago. Actual measured weight savings (usual bathroom scale method) with motor was 23 lbs, not including the roof panel, which we kept, or the headliner, which was weighed separately as part of a pile of interior trim. I don't think you'd be able to remove the headliner intact with your cage in place, as it's rather large. We did however remove the sunroof cassette despite a full welded cage, but I had to cut the sunroof side rails in half to get it down to manageable size for extraction. The roof panel is now held in with machined aluminum blocks bolted in place (there's a guy who sells these). We didn't weight the roof panel itself, since it was reinstalled, but I'd guess about 15 lbs. it's pretty stout, with welded-in reinforcements on the underside. Neil 96 M3

Just raise the height and give it a shot. With 2 Nine MM spring pads, you should be all set :) I would have kept those springs if I were running Konis, but with the stock Bilstiens, they were horrible (under damped-pogo stick feeling). The next upgrade would be to use Turner Group G springs (which I have along with matching Bilsteins). I think you can run these springs as well with your Konis but there is not need for it (IMO) since all you need more height. And for the weight loss, throw in a "Cool Suit" instead ;) Ahmad _____ From: Tom Melton [mailto:Tom.Melton@emoryhealthcare.org] Sent: Tuesday, April 11, 2006 10:49 AM To: E36M3@bmw-m.net; Ahmad Lutfeali Subject: Re: [E36M3] Sunroof Weight?
