Date: Wed, 19 Apr 2006 19:10:35 -0700 From: "Marco" <m3driver@iname.com> Subject: RE: [e36m3] [E36M3] Rotor mount bolt stripped Are you talking about the small hex head bolt that "holds" the rotor to the hub? if so just drill off the head and pull off the rotor. Then cut a slot in it to fit a screw driver. Liberally apply liquid wrench (over night) and then heat it up with a propane torch. If you're lucky you'll be able to get it off. if you can't just put the new rotor back on with the old bolt stud there. It really doesn't have any purpose besides hold the rotor flush when you're putting on the wheels. Its the lug bolts that actually hold the rotor on the hub. btw - if you've never had the rotor off more than likey it's frozen to the hub. You'll have to bang the hell out of it to knock it off the hub. I had to use a 5# sledge. I was worried what it was going to do to the wheel bearings but had no choice. 7 years later and countless track sessions they've been fine. For the new rotors put a very light coat of anti-seize on the rotor hub interface. Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2006 00:59:56 -0400 From: "Stan Shaw" <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Windows My windows, particularly the driver side is rattling often and squeaking when going up or down. This is in a '96 M3 with @160k miles on it, so I suspect there are worn parts in the window support mechanism. Has anyone dealt with this? Any writeup or parts lists available? Thanks! #6. This car is amazing... - from Scott

Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2006 00:24:44 -0700 From: "Scott" <stiles_s@hotmail.com> Subject: This car is amazing... Preaching to the choir, but I just wanted to share a drive I took today. I've had my '97 m3/2 now for about 6mos. I've been through a ton of cars (22 and counting -- I'm sure there's a name for the sickness I have), one of which was a '99 M3/2 I owned (new) for a couple years. In between, I had an s4, an s2000, a turbo Miata, and a 996 among others . I always looked back fondly on the M3 as one of the few cars I really missed. I'm writing this because I'm just amazed by how great a driving experience the e36 M3 still provides. It stands toe to toe with the best you can buy today, IMO. Mine is pretty stock, with 86k miles. A few braces, good wheels/tires, new fluids, and bilsteins. Still has the OE control arms ( not for long ). I took it on my first "fun drive" in good weather today. Roughly 200miles round trip with mixed highway and some good twisties, hauling 4 wheels/tires on the return trip. The mix of handling, practicality, comfort and economy this car provides is pretty amazing. I absolutely flew on some of these roads and the car returned an indicated 29+ mpg while providing great driving experience. Compared to my wife's V8 S4 Avant, this thing is a Hybrid :) I sold my 996 to help buy some property, and bought the M3 to replace it. I told my wife tonight that I honestly *prefer* the way the M3 drives to the 996. Steering feel, great gearbox, plenty of (smooth) power, balanced confident chassis, etc. The 996 would have provided a similarly fun driving experience today, with probably a bit poorer MPG, but I sure wouldn't have been hauling back a set of truck tires in it. It's a hell of a car. Makes me want to keep it for a long long time and make it as "new" as I can. Scott. I'm sure it'll puke all its coolant tomorrow just to keep me on my toes.

I don't care if anybody wants to mention almost anything on the list. But, if it doesn't really relate to the E36 M3, it should go off list with those who have an interest. is it so hard to hit the reply button, and then to press ctrl + A to delete all the text?

#8. RE:Rotor mount bolt stripped - from Lawrence Barbieri

Date: Thu, 20 Apr 2006 07:40:20 -0400 From: "Lawrence Barbieri" <larry@logicalconclusions.com> Subject: RE:Rotor mount bolt stripped Alex, I assume you mean the hex head of the set screw is stripped and you can't keep a hex wrench in there? I just had this happen last week. I used a drill and a bit size that was just smaller than the diameter of the screw head. Drill carefully until most of the head is removed. Then you'll be able to pop the rotor off (it may need some coaxing). Once it's off there will be a nub of the set screw remaining. Put a pair of vise grips on it and unscrew it. If you are lucky, it will just unscrew with almost no effort. If it's really frozen in there, soak it with penetrating oil first. Obviously, you'll have to visit the parts department at the dealer for a replacement screw. Get several while you are there as spares. To avoid this in the future, use some good anti-seize on the threads and head of the screw when you reinstall it and don't tighten it down too much. The torque spec. on this is 16Nm (~12 lbs/ft). I've haven't reset my cons1 on the OBC for the last year or so, and it's at 20.4 as of this morning, usually it's 19.9 but I logged some hwy time over easter weekend. My regular work commute is a blend of hwy/city driving, and I do get aggressive with the go pedal on good average. 96k total mileage, 20k on plugs and O2 sensors, new 255/40 tires, 0w40 mobile uno all the time, fan deleted, but otherwise stock, I should probably get better than what I am getting, maybe its alignment related or something else, or maybe you have a freak!
