Since we all use tools to work on our cars, hopefully this isn't too OT. I've got some Snap-on Torx sockets that have some rust on the bits. Does anyone have a recommended method for removing the rust without damaging the bit? Also, does anyone have a good Snap-On source? Maybe a dealer that'll do internet/over the phone sales and ship tools (at a discount, I can pay full price off a truck)? Most stuff I can find on Ebay, but sometimes I'd like things that don't show up on Ebay and I can't quite swallow list price. Thanks, Mike

Same here. I regularly buy tools from SnapOn.com; pretty easy. As a matter of fact, the last purchase was a few Torx bits :-) Jim Bassett

Anyone know the proper torque spec for the top nut? Again this is on the Ground Control Koni SA race kit running GC camber plates. Thanks! Dave 98 M3/4 -----Original Message----- Hitting Konis with an impact on the top nut is a sure way to make sure that they're gonners soon, if not already. Hand tighten those bad boys all the delicate adjustment crap is up top (I believe). I double nut the top to make sure they don't loosen up. Hold the shaft somewhere that isn't going to damage the area that goes inside the strut insert, probably the best way is to pull the struts and do it on your work bench. -Carlos.

Bob, My '95 M3 had a similar-sounding problem. For me the leak turned out to be a long helical crack on the expansion tank itself--not along an seam or anything just a long twisting crack running vertical in the middle of the tank. The odd part was that the crack was invisible and water-tight when the car was cool. The only way I found it was that I opened the hood when the car was hot and running and found a fine spray coming out of the side of the tank. A piece of high-adhesive aluminum HVAC tape held it together long enough for a new tank to come in. Once the tank was out I could see the crack was probably six inches long and was probably going to catastrophically fail soon. (Our car was a year and 80k miles older than yours when this happened though.) YMMV Kevin -------------------- 8 -------------------- Date: Tue, 25 Apr 2006 15:39:48 -0400 From: mdriver13@aol.com Subject: Radiator Question -- fluid leaking, should I be concerned... Group, I'm starting to experience a "leakage" of fluid which appears to be coming from under the radiator cap and/or bleed screw but hard to tell exactly where. There are signs of dried antifreeze on the black plastic cover and running down the sides of the expansion/refill tank which occurred after this weekend's autox. I've started to look everyday but only find the dry crusty stuff, never wet, and never on the ground. I did need to add 250ml of water/antifreeze to the system after only two weeks and the weather here in PA is not that warm yet. Question is, "Is this the beginning of the end for my radiator (only 46K miles) or is it just the cap and/or bleeder screw that needs replacing?" #5. Project for the weekend, transmission removal... - from Jamie Howton

The last track outing I noticed some oil leaking from between the engine and trans. It can only be the main crank seal or the transmission input shaft seal, but since I am using more engine oil than normal I am betting on the former which means flywheel off too. I replaced both seals about 25,000 street miles and 6,000 track miles ago when I had the tranny out to remove the guts of the clutch slave cylinder from the flywheel housing. I know I've posted about that episode before and the resultant 4 times out with the transmission. I am going for only once this time because I learned a lesson: just pay the money for the factory tool used to install seals, home made ones don't work well unless you have access to a lathe. I don't need any tips except for "don't screw it up this time", but If anyone in Illinois wants to come and hang out for a transmission removal on jackstands, give me a shout. Mine was gunked up pretty bad when I did the cooling system overhaul. Probably stuck in the "full" position. No errors, but I didn't have low coolant. It's working great after cleaning. Probably the only thing I didn't replace other than the fan shroud. The sensor had been replaced by the dealer once before when I was getting low coolant messages. Mike Mike, As you say, there have been several good responses to the original question. I especially liked the one about purging the air out with the engine off and running the heater. My experience with the Low Coolant Level message is when the outside temperature is below 30 degrees. Then once the engine warms up to normal operating temp, the message goes away. I've checked the coolant level and its been fine, as well as, the coolant specific gravity (good to -30). I can't imagine the stuff in the expansion tank is freezing, so maybe there is an air bubble issue.... anyone else have this happen???? r3 97 M3, ArcticSilver/Black 86 325, Red/Silver specks (long story)[soon to be a track car] --------------------------------- Blab-away for as little as 1¢/min. #10. messages from the E36 M3 group - from Tom Yee

Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 14:54:56 -0400 From: "Tom Yee" <tomgsr@hotmail.com> Subject: messages from the E36 M3 group Hello, Suzy: I have a quick question regarding the messages from the E36 M3 group. It seems as though I am now receiving the messages in both the digest and individual post formats. I would prefer to receive them only in the digest format. I am unsure why this might have changed (or whether it is a hotmail issue?) but wonder if I could return to the preferred version. Thank you for your help (and for the contact with the others sharing passion!) Regards, Tom Yee
