#2. 95 M3 won't crank - from Scott Spangenberg

I haven't visited the list in a long time, but I hope the collective wisdom here can help. Several times in the year since I bought my '95 M3 5-speed, there has been a brief pause between when I turn the key to the "start" position and when the engine begins to crank. I never thought much about it, but now the problem is worse. I started the car in storage several times over the winter with no problem. It also started fine when I drove it out of the garage for the first time this spring. However, an hour after I got it out I went to move it again and it refused to crank at all. No clicking, no noises whatsoever. Everything looked fine, the battery is good, the dash lights all seemed fine, but no crank. I went back the next morning and it cranked and fired right up (?!?!). Today I moved it again in preparation to have some work done tomorrow. It started right up and drove out of the garage fine. I went back several hours later to move it and again no crank :-/ What could be going on? I suppose that either the starter solenoid isn't getting a start signal for some reason or the solenoid itself is faulty. Does anybody have experience with a problem like this? It does seem to be engine speed related, but only under load. It doesn't do it at idle while revving the engine. I studied the sound a bit more tonight as well, and it is definitely unusual, and a bit hard to replicate consistently. It is a bit of a fluttery sound, unlike the normal noises the S50 makes. I asked a friend to take a ride with me tonight to see if he had any idea, but he didn't seem to feel sure of what it was either. Since it does seem to be engine speed related, that means it's the engine, right? :'( booo. I guess I'll just keep driving it and see how things go. OH, BTW, what was the crank position sensor recall for? What were the symptoms? Or am I completely off base because that didn't apply to the M3? (I can't remember now). I looked at the wheels before putting them on the car Friday night, but didn't notice any cracks. It was a quick look, though, and you can bet I'll be MUCH more thorough on my wheel inspections in the future. I have to assume a hairline crack was already there, but from what, I don't know. It broke as I was getting on the freeway to head to California Speedway for the weekend. I actually heard it "pop," but thought it was either a tool in my trunk, or a sway bar mount breaking. Once I got to my destination, I looked at the wheel and saw one spoke had cracked all the way through! I'm counting myself as VERY luck that it didn't happen on track, as I wouldn't have heard it, and there's a good chance the rest of the spokes would followed shortly after. Jonathan L.

When they get old they do self destruct. It's an 8" diameter donut of 2" thick rubber and that is something that wouldn't make any noise when reving the engine out of gear. -- Jamie Howton 2006 M Roadster (P.C. That's probably a lot easier than the luck method that you currently appear to be employing. I'm not saying that I think the items that are required make much sense, but if that's the rules, that's the rules. I know people that put a stock engine in their car to pass the smog test here in CA, then change back to their performance engine until the next inspection is required."

#10. Hawk ceramic or HPS for spirited street driving? - from William Townsend

Hey all, Anyone ever compare these two pads for just street use? Looking for: good torque bite, low dust, low noise, spirited street use only. I have heard bad things about the hps but I think those folks tried them on track. Anyone ever used the ceramics??? Have not heard much about them, the ultra low dust is an attractive quality.
