You can swap radiators on slush-boxes without touching the tranny fluid lines. Next time (or for anyone else reading), just unscrew the tranny fluid mini-radiator from the real thing (IIRC, 4 bolts). It's tight, but doable. > Does anyone have ideas on getting the fluid level right > again without going through the temperature and lift thing > that Bentley asks for? Sorry, but no. You really want to get the tranny fluid level right. The fluid expands as it heats up, so if you measure with cold fluid, you will likely over-fill. It also helps a lot to fill the tranny when it's perfectly level == lift all 4 corners on either jack stands or a lift. If you are only adding a little bit of coolant, consider taking the car to the dealer where they will add a 1/2 quart of the BMW juice from a drum (not sure if they sell it in bottles). Alternatively, you are welcome to join the dark side of the slush-box owners who actually maintain their automatic transmission. I have been replacing the filters (drop the trany pan to get to it)/fluid on my wife's car for the last 106+K miles. You'll need a filter/gasket kit (~$50), your choice of fluid (I went with Redline ATF, but other opinions exist) and patience. The process is extremely straight forward, but is a lot easier/faster with access to a lift - talk to you local CCA chapter about organizing Do It Yourself events at local dealer/independent shops! Bottom of the tranny - always wet. Recently it got worse. As it turned out a threaded oil galley plug in the back of the head had backed out and was leaking pressurized oil onto the bell housing, and in the end flowing onto the exhaust. I jacked it up, cleaned off tranny, and it appears fluid is coming from one of the two threaded holes on the bottom of tranny about 6 inches behind the engine. What are those holes - some sort of overflow? And is this a bad thing or somewhat normal (i've never noticed it before)? I did have the transmission oil drained/filled recently and just completed a 3 day DE at VIR. One or both of those might have something to do with it? thanks, marty

#3. X-Brace install - from Gus Iverson

Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 10:29:09 -0700 From: "Gus Iverson" <gus.iverson@gmail.com> Subject: X-Brace install I received my new X-Brace from Bimmerworld last week with installation hardware. As I have a 98 sedan, I belive that I've got all the bits and pieces either already installed to take it or in the box with the brace. Can anyone confirm and ease the mind of this very minimally competent mechanic? Any gotchas I should be aware of going into this? Thanks

All M3s came with the nutserts pre-installed from the factory, so all you have to do it removed the factory bar and replace it with the x-brace. It might be helpful to clean out the threads to where the front of the x-brace attaches to the front subframe- mine were full of mud and dirt. The whole process took me no more than 30 mins including jacking up the car installing one on my 1998 sedan. Drive Safely, Raza

Only thing to not do is don't drive the car once you have removed the factory brace (cross bar) unless the X-Brace is installed, i.e., should have one or the other. The X-Brace replaces the factory cross bar. IIRC, it's 4 small bolts in front (2 per side), and 2 large bolts in teh rear (1 per side). And I imagine the Bimmerworld folks included all the necessary hardware. A fairly extensive procedure can be found at: <http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/suspension/e36_rons_xbrace_install.html> You can ignore the references to "nutserts", since as Raza mentioned, your car came pre-threaded. Just be safe, support the car properly, and you should be fine. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 JP

Yup my 5/94 95 M3 didn't have them either, my roommate has a 3/94 one and I don't expect it to have them either. My 98 M3 came with one already installed. :-) Thanks Bobby C. -Carlos 98 M3
