#4. Help Isolating Suspension Noise - from Greg Gantt

Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 21:56:24 -0400 From: "Greg Gantt" <ggantt@gantt-consulting.com> Subject: Help Isolating Suspension Noise So this clunking noise is driving me nuts, as I've not been able to isolate the source and need some help. The noise is a pop/clunk sound that as far as I can tell comes from the rear only when I push the car hard through corners. The sound is so brief and rather omnipresent, so I haven't been able to tell which side or be certain it's coming from the rear. To troubleshoot, I've disconnected the front and rear sway bars as I thought end links but the noise persists. I have a GC suspension with Koni SAs and RSMs all with about 15K miles. The RTABs were replaced about 5K miles ago with GC reinforcements. The suspension has been great and is quiet under all conditions except hard cornering - especially hard right corners. Now that the sway bars are disconnected, I'm thinking either a coil spring pop from one corner or possibly the rear subframe mounts are worn and allow the diff to move and clunk. I've had the car on stands to do visual and physical checks, but I haven't found anything I can deflect to reproduce the noise. Any ideas on how to track this thing down? Is there a procedure to test/check the subframe bushings to see if they're shot? I want to be certain I've got it before replacing anything. Thanks. Greg '95 M3

Date: Thu, 25 May 2006 01:09:29 -0500 From: "Eric Giles" <egiles@c-gate.net> Subject: Re: [E36M3] Help Isolating Suspension Noise Here is something to check: with the car on the ground in neutral with the parking brake off, grab each one of the rear wheels by the spokes and pull hard back and forth, as if you are trying to push and pull the car sideways. If you hear some clunking or popping noises, then go one step further. While someone is pushing and pulling on one of the rear wheels, have someone else crawl under the bottom of the car on their back. You should be able to hear the noise much better now. Grab each of the lower camber arms and twist them the best you can-if the noise quits, then (for a '95) the lower control arm outer bushings are worn and need replacing. However, if there is still some noise present while you are holding the lower camber arms in tension, then the upper control arm outer balljoints also need replacing. I had a similar noise on my '97 M3 and it drove me NUTS for months trying to track down the source. I had replaced everything but these parts and finally by accident I used the troubleshooting method I described above and finally found out the issue. I replaced all four balljoints (I believe the '96-99 M3's had all balljoints at these locations) and the noises quit and the rear end of the car felt MUCH tighter. I made a long post and writeup on the procedure on Bimmerforums a couple of years ago and can send you the link if needed.
