#5. New owner, swaybar question - from Paul Andrews

Date: Sun, 28 May 2006 11:55:50 -0400 From: "Paul Andrews" <emosound@verizon.net> Subject: New owner, swaybar question Hey all, I've been lurking on the list for a week or 2, so it's time for some questions.... I've owned my M3/4 for a month now, and autocrossed it twice. Time to start the mods: I have H&R swaybars on order to help reduce the body roll. Some on the various forums really suggest the rear swaybar mount reinforcements from Turner or GC. I ordered the cheap GC ones, and figured out how they line up. The car is going to Bimmerworks on Tuesday, should I have them do this right away? Steve says he has never seen this issue, have you guys who autocross with bigger swaybars had issues with the rear swaybar mounts cracking or tearing off? -Paul Andrews 98 M3/4 Alpine White <----- Loving it!

When I was running RD bars with an otherwise stock suspension, I broke several front sway bar brackets and eventually broke one of the rear tabs twice. Once before going to a stiffer suspension, and once shortly after. I've had the Turner kit welded in and haven't had any problems since. It's relatively inexpensive "insurance" and easier to do it now than waiting for something to break, IMHO. Jonathan L.

#7. diff fluid change - from Brian Ruiz
Top
Date: Sun, 28 May 2006 13:37:31 -0700 From: "Brian Ruiz" <eurowerke@gmail.com> Subject: diff fluid change Hey all, I posted the same message to UUC; I apologize for the duplicates. I went in to change the diff fluid yesterday in an attempt to narrow down the possibilities for the vibration and noise I've been getting on the M3. I drained the fluid (it was a bluish-green color, seemed pretty clean). What color is the OEM BMW differential oil? I think I've heard that the Swepco oil is bluish-green also? Perhaps it was that. In any case, I'm replacing with Redline 75W-90. I figure this is a good choice? Also, I forgot to pick up new sealing washers for the drain and fill plugs, so I didn't fill the diff back up with new fluid yet. The car is in my parents' driveway at the moment, and I don't want to leave it there over the long weekend until I can grab some new washers, so would it be okay to roll the car off the driveway and into the street without any lube in the diff or is that a bit risky? Thanks all. Brian 95 M3

Steve says he has never seen this issue, have you guys who autocross with bigger swaybars had issues with the rear swaybar mounts cracking or tearing off? Hi Paul, You will love this list. Welcome to the bottomless pit of M3 aftermarket parts unlimited! I run the Eibach sway bars (26mm front / 24mm rear), and because there were people having issues I reinforced the rear swaybar mounts using the Turner pieces. Good insurance for the money spent, IMHO. I just use the OEM brackets in front and have not had an issue. Also, have you upgraded the rear shock mounts and does the car have an x-brace? I just talked to Steve last week about installing my Eibach springs! regards, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe (sponsored by WCC & JT-Designs) Philly Region SCCA 2005 Philly Region BSP Champion

Date: Sun, 28 May 2006 16:55:21 -0700 From: "Brian Ruiz" <eurowerke@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] diff fluid change I found some M22 copper washers at an auto parts store, which is the exact same size as the original washers, so I think I'll go ahead and use them. I got to that shop at about 2:55, and they closed at 3, quite lucky. My only concern with the copper is galvanic corrosion, but I think that won't happen as I don't think the differential is galvanized steel (??) and I'll be safe.. :-P The Bentley doesn't list a torque for the drain and fill plugs, is there a value anyone can recommend? I think I'll go with about 25 ft lbs, unless someone disagrees.
