#3. Oil Religion - from jeffrey Lin

Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2006 10:12:24 -0700 (PDT) From: jeffrey Lin <jeffreywlin@yahoo.com> Subject: Oil Religion It's interesting how people have their favorite oil. Folks like: Redline, Mobil 1, Lubro Moly, Elf, Amsoil, etc. It's interesting that folks go out of there way to get oils that might not be readily avaialbe through most channels (like lubromoly, redline, elf, amsoil etc). How does anybody really know if an oil is better w/o doing analysis or doing a controlled test side by side with 2 engines? I'm personally a BMW Oil guy because it's reasonably priced, and I figure if BMW warantees an engine for 100K miles if the car goes CPO at 15K oil change intervals, I figure it's decent stuff. Now of course, I change it every 5K miles (still chicken), but on leased cars I change it when they pay for it. I'll give you some longevity data points. 1970 Olds 98, my dad bought this new. He changed the oil every 2.5-3K miles. Used 10w-40 in california winters 20w-50 in summer. Got rid of the car in the early 90s had 250K miles on it. Never had a valve job, used 1/4 qt between oil changes. 1982 GMC JImmy 5.7L V8. Dad bought this new changes oil every 3K miles, runs on the dino juice. Motor has never had a valve job. Uses 1 qtr every 3K miles. Motor has 350K miles with a lot of miles towing. Still has this thing. 1992 Honda Accord, little 4 qt pan, my friend bot new changed oil every 7.5Kmiles, sold the car at over 200K miles. engine ran great 2000 BMW 540i. My friend bought new, changes oil at 15K miles when the light comes on with bmw synthetic. Still running strong. So what I'm saying here is....dino oil or synthetic oil is fine. Just make sure you change it at least as often as the mfg recommends. I've rarely seen a BMW engine wear out from driving. Most of the time if a BMW engine has a premature death is because of a colling system failure or overrev. So maybe intead of being super anal about the oil, be super anal with the cooling system.

#4. half shaft rotational play - from Evan Bradford

Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2006 10:21:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Evan Bradford <evbrad2002@yahoo.com> Subject: half shaft rotational play How much rotational play in the half-shaft is within normal limits? While my car is up on jackstands, the rear passenger wheel will rotate an inch or two while the car is in gear and parking brake is engaged. The driver's side has zero rotational play. While some of the play seems to occur at the final drive, some also seems to occur at the outer cv/hub/wheel area. FWIW, the rear bearing was just replaced due to the 6 o'clock/12 o'clock rock plus thrum. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! So...there is either slop in your rear parking brake on the passenger side or the parking brake isn't adjusted correctly. All my other engines have run Castrol 10W-50 or Mobil-1 15W50. I've never had an engine failure of any type or needed a rebuild, and at least one motor is past 100,000 miles. >Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2006 10:12:24 -0700 (PDT) >From: jeffrey Lin <jeffreywlin@yahoo.com> >Subject: Oil Religion > >It's interesting how people have their favorite oil. You have some slop in the tranny, diff, and half shafts..... I wouldn't say that it's at all uncommon to be able to rotate the wheel an inch (measured at the circumference). #10. Oil - from Rich Dorffer
Top
Date: Tue, 6 Jun 2006 14:03:20 -0400 From: "Rich Dorffer" <E36M3Digest@gmail.com> Subject: Oil What makes Amsoil so good? I would recommend many good synthetics such as Castrol 0W30 (made in Germany and commonly referred to as GC amongst oil wonks), Mobil 1 0W40, Red Line, Royal Purple and the new Pennzoil Platinum as well as many others (particularly if you branch out outside of the US). Find an oil and a weight that works for your motor and give it a try. You are splitting hairs with many of the quality synthetics and most all oils (conventional and synthetic) are appropriate for many different circumstances, usage and drain intervals. Regards, Rich
