TCK nees to make the studs longer in his. In the past I've used the GC, and currently have those from list sponsor Rogue. Both work well and have adequately long studs. The Rogue has its own full circle reinforcing plate to which the mounting studs are welded. Neil 96 M3

If you get tired of 'getting the hang of it' the special tool is pretty cheap if I remember right. One note: When you remove the old cylinder be sure to remove the tiny broken metal tab from the notch in the steering column. That's the little sucker that breaks away from the body of the cylinder and lets it spin. Mine was broken off so smooth that I did not notice it until I tried to install the new cylinder. Had to get a small pair of tweezers to coax it out of the little slot it was broken off in. Dave T.
