I'm already dropping quite a bit of cash rebuilding the cooling system, so an extra $100 bucks or so doesn't seem like too much to do it right. I plan on keeping this car for a long time yet. It's part of a program of longevity related replacements and upgrades I've been doing (e.g. RE finned diff cover). Since a successful result is that nothing happens, it's hard to gauge success. Certainly the Stewart water pump seems nicely designed and made and I'm basically glad I did it. My wife's' 328 came with a 92C (verify in realoem.com), I recently swapped it for an 88C. 80C might work but would don't want to run to cold. Sounds like a stuck T-stat or clogged heater core that is not transferring heat properly. KLBurgess -------------------- 4 -------------------- Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2006 11:34:16 -0800 From: "Matthew Teel" <mteel@beluga.com> Subject: Thermostat options It looks like there are a lot of options on thermostats. In short, I can go with the stock 88C/92C thermostat or a "higher performance" thermostat of 80C, 75C or 71C. As I mentioned, I am planning on doing the fan delete, but I live in a very cool climate (Alaska). The absolute hottest temperatures that I am likely to encounter would be around 80 degrees F. It's possible to see 95F in the interior, but I have had my car there only once during summer since I bought it new in '98, so realistically this car will spend the remainder of it's life here in South Central where a warm day is 72 degrees F. I just can't imagine that I need either a "high performance" thermo or secondary switch for the auxiliary fan. I don't even think the thermostat hardly opens during winter as the heater struggles to warm the interior of the car. But the last thing that I want to do is set myself up for overheating. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Matthew 98 M3/4

The short answer: I've run the Mark I fan delete kit - which consists of nothing more than deleting the fan! - for some while in a much warmer climate than you (Indiana) with no ill effects. Lowell Seaton, who lives in Dallas, a warmer climate yet, will tell you the same thing. All in all I think that letting the engine run in the temperature range that BMW intended is a pretty fair course of action. The long answer is that in theory running cooler gives a little more power (at the expense of emissions), but the fan switch/thermostat change will only make the engine run cooler under a very limited range of circumstances, specifically when the heat exchanger system capacity substantially exceeds the engine's heat output. In practical terms that means you'll see lower temperatures when the engine is loafing - and therefore you don't really care! - but not when you're hammering on it. So why bother? I welcome dissenting theories, but that's how I see it, and practical experience bears me out. Neil 96 M3

However, I want to hit Sears Point before the end of the year, so I think the 2 day with the GGC just might be the ticket. Drive Safely, Raza

#10. ABS/ASC lights - from Matthew Teel

Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2006 16:04:27 -0800 From: "Matthew Teel" <mteel@beluga.com> Subject: ABS/ASC lights The same day my water pump went out, my dash lit up with the ASC and ABS lights. I also threw a check engine light, but that's another thread. The Bentley manual just says to clean and inspect, and if no visual faults can be found have the system diagnosed by and authorized BMW dealer. If cleaning and inspecting yield no results, is there anyway that I can troubleshoot to determine which wheel speed sensor is bad, if any? Thanks, Matthew 98 M3/4
