And Jim is also right about mounting it on the passenger seat. The sedan's B pillar is right in the way. I'm going to play around with some options tomorrow and see what I can figure out. One possibility I was thinking of was mounting the receiver on the passenger side, roof grab handle. Otherwise, I think I might just have to settle for mounting it in the door again. I learned more about what is faster (with concrete evidence) and what isn't in 25 minutes with a borrowed GPS data logger than in the thousands of laps looking at the tach to see if I exited with a few more revs. A shame... as an instructor I could really use that as a tool to demonstrate to students how the things they are learning are providing real, tangible results. If you guys have never had a chance to run w/ a Traqmate - find a buddy with one and give it a try for a session. Awesome stuff. -- Walter

Speaking generally, auto insurance policies exclude coverage for "competitive or timed events." Use of a timing device such as the Hot Lap, which requires a fixed base unit, might be construed as blanket approval for timing on the part of the organizers. This would potentially put insurance coverage of every single participant in jeopardy. On the other hand it's not practical to have a Chronometer Police to control personal use of self-contained in car timing devices, from stopwatches to data acquisition systems. These also arguably have legitimate value for measuring individual driver development. For related reasons, when Club Races are held during a school weekend as they often are, a separate staff is used and different published rules apply to each event. Neil 96 M3

I said you couldn't use an in-car lap timer. A data logger may be acceptable provided that you cannot see the lap timing display while driving. For example, I bring my race car to GGC events when I instruct and I have an AIM MXL dash/logger in the car. However, I don't put the beacon out so I don't get lap times. - Mark ----- mark@pdc-racing.net Check out my JustRacing Home Page at: http://www.justracing.com/homepage/mdadgar

This is also correct. It requires a different option on the insurance policy, too, with the related higher cost. - Mark ----- mark@pdc-racing.net Check out my JustRacing Home Page at: http://www.justracing.com/homepage/mdadgar
