#2. Original BMW bumpers molded in color? - from Goss, Patrick - PA

Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2006 15:58:33 -0500 From: "Goss, Patrick - PA" <Patrick.Goss@GMACM.COM> Subject: Original BMW bumpers molded in color? I have verified that in the case of many Mercedes vehicles that OEM replacement bumpers come molded in color as one option and thus a cheaper 2nd alternative OEM replacement is one that requires painting albeit still a genuine part. I am sure any self respecting vehicle enthusiast would desire the 1st option. What is the case with our bimmers? I understand that most shops would rather push customers to the latter choice of the two as with the "cedes" and that we lowly roundel beating enthusiasts may have only experience with the re-paints, but I am trying to find someone to verify if this is available for our cars. Does anybody "really" know? Asking the insurance company and body shop normally nets the "cheaper" answer. I want the more durable factory finish answer. Patrick Goss

Long story short is that it gets a new driver's door and a front fender. The body shop guy told me that the paint would have to be "blended" into both the rear door and the hood to even out the color. I'm more than a little nervous about the sound of that, although given the choice of a soft transition from one slightly different color shade to another is probably better than having the two doors look completely different in the right (wrong) light. Does anyone have personal experience with this and if so, please share with me. I trust this shop, but I'm very scared of having a two tone car. Chuck Hanson

I'd say your hum is more of an exhuast resonance amplified by engine combustion rather than a header resonance if you've only experienced the difference with different mufflers. I'd be curious to hear more, at least the NVH engineer in me would. Did you notice any change in exhaust resonance with cam kit installation (again assuming you did the cam kit without any other changes)? Keep in mind today's paint systems often use paint swatches from an actual shot taken from your car's paint. My First blend experience was from a replaced front fender, so blend from hood to door. I wasn't happy with it as all they did was put another layer of clear cote on top of the door. This work was redone and matched perfect in almost all shades of day/night. The 2nd incident was the blend of the other fender and door panels into the right side and hood. That blend was right on! This car was Milano Red and difficult since Honda reds of that era faded/aged rather aggressively. I think the quality of your blend will likely result on condition of surrounding paint etc. For what it is worth I wouldn't go putting a fresh coat of wax on like most do, I've been told that its almost a certain receipe for clear that will not adhere well, (thus freckling over time) to the existing blended panels. Also consider that if there is any shine difference you can always not wax the new areas for a few years until they catch up with the rest of the car that you are waxing! It's an attempt to get a second set of track wheels that match the others, for easier rotation and the ability to have matching spare. The 7.5" spare I have will also be for sale as soon as the other four sell. In the third picture (first of the single wheels) you can see that this one's not in as good of shape as the others. There are some weird blemishes, like some guy had serious problems with the tire machine or something. I can't really tell what they're from, and the original owner that I got two of them from isn't certain either. The other two I've had since the car was brought home from the dealer, and their in pretty good shape. There are minor blemishes, as the wheels are 6 years old, but they're all straight and balance fine. http://www.x-rep.com/images/DSC00260.jpg http://www.x-rep.com/images/DSC00261.jpg http://www.x-rep.com/images/DSC00262.jpg http://www.x-rep.com/images/DSC00263.jpg http://www.x-rep.com/images/DSC00264.jpg http://www.x-rep.com/images/DSC00265.jpg The tires are all 245/40-17 BFG g-Force Sports and have about 85%+ tread left. I'd prefer a SoCal buyer, but am willing to ship if needed. Asking $800 OBO for wheels AND tires. If interested, please email me at ironjdl@aol.com Thanks, Jonathan L.
