I need to change the top hats (sorry, I don't remember the right name -- it's the plate that is at the top of the strut, held on via the strut not, with the three studs that come up through the body and are held in place via nuts or via a cross brace) on my LWT. I have been using those from a 3.2l car, swapped side-to-side for added camber, but I'v had it with the extreme inside-edge tire wear I've been getting (down to steel on the inside long before the outside is well worn), and so I'm going back to the stock top hats instead. Anyway, what is the _fastest_ way to do this? I figure remove the front wheels, disconnect the sway bar, and then? Is it faster to actually remove the strut, use spring compressors, etc., or just remove the nut from the top, and unload the suspension enough so that the whole thing comes apart as you lower the suspension. Any BTDT advice appreciated. I no longer enjoy working on cars, but I gotta get this done ASAP. Hi Andrew, Not to state the obvious but, I too run more negative camber for street use then my tires like, so I have the tires turned on the rims after about 10K miles. It helps. Also, there are adjustable camber plates that are very user friendly. regards, Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe (sponsored by WCC & JT-Designs) Philly Region SCCA 2005 Philly Region BSP Champion -----Original Message----- From: aek@pumpkininc.com To: e36m3@bmw-m.net Sent: Sun, 23 Jul 2006 11:45 PM Subject: [E36M3] Fastest way to change front strut top hats? John Mason is decent fellow and will very willingly explain all there is to know about his design. I would have ordered his front one too, but we both already had JTD up front. The front wasn't available last time I was in the market either. I sold a 3rd bar to somebody else on this list, and I haven't heard any good bad from them. I think the general consensus on the Mason's stuff is very big performance payoff for the dollar. Or is it OK with this much > fluid? You can remove some if you want, but according to one of my mechanics (Ramon at Bavarian Motorsport) it'll be OK with more than "Cold" level. Any excess will bleed out through the cap. (I just replaced the thermostat & housing gasket on Sat - in 112F heat, no less, yuck - and went through the fill/bleed procedure. Cross-checked everything with a phone call to Ramon. Car is good to go.) Hope that helps, Jim Bassett - DIY-er, but also has excellent back-up :-) 1998 M3/4 - next, new exhaust hangers 1993 325is #44 JP - needs new A/C compressor for Thurs/Fri
