#1. Fastest way to change front strut top hats? - from Mo Karamat

You will want to remove the strut (just a few nuts), and use the spring compressors. It does not take too long. Good luck Mo -------------------- 1 -------------------- Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2006 23:40:05 -0400 From: "aek@pumpkininc.com" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: Fastest way to change front strut top hats? Hi All. I need to change the top hats (sorry, I don't remember the right name -- it's the plate that is at the top of the strut, held on via the strut not, with the three studs that come up through the body and are held in place via nuts or via a cross brace) on my LWT. I have been using those from a 3.2l car, swapped side-to-side for added camber, but I'v had it with the extreme inside-edge tire wear I've been getting (down to steel on the inside long before the outside is well worn), and so I'm going back to the stock top hats instead. Anyway, what is the _fastest_ way to do this? I figure remove the front wheels, disconnect the sway bar, and then? Is it faster to actually remove the strut, use spring compressors, etc., or just remove the nut from the top, and unload the suspension enough so that the whole thing comes apart as you lower the suspension. Any BTDT advice appreciated. I no longer enjoy working on cars, but I gotta get this done ASAP. Thanks, --Andrew

I dumped in some more refrigerant last summer and it helped a bit, but perhaps I need even more. The can came with a cheesy gauge, but it did not give confidence inspiring readings. I may just bite the bullet it and take it into an AC shop somewhere, although it sure does seem like 90% of all shops are full of crooks. Still looking for a covered place to work on my car a little closer to DC, Mark, but your offer is much appreciated. If things get bad enough, maybe I'll have to make a road trip! Thanks, Zach

Check the filter. I just replaced mine and the filter has a huge impact on air flow and on system performance. Checked the fuse for the aux fan. Blown had to replace it. 104+ in the SF Bay Area and the car is cool.
