I didn't install the kit originally since it was installed by Bimmerworld in prep for the VIR 13 hour a few years back. The kit has always worked well for me and this loose clamp was my fault since I had just replaced the pump. My problem was on the passenger side as well. My leak was very small, not a gusher by any stretch. In fact it took about 25 minutes of running to fill the pump to where the electrical shorting happened. After looking into it, it was from Norther Tool: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200309403_200309403 The outside of the brace goes on the top of the inner fender (right along the hood line) The chains go to the engine hook right above the T-stat housing. That went pretty well. However, I have read various reports of motor mount replacement on our M3s. One list member said the steering trumpet gets in the way; another said it can be done without a lift -- or removal of other major components. Can anyone report DIY sucess with left & right mounts and/or DIY instructions if there are known 'tricks' to make it work? I installed the '96 rear sway bar on my '95 M3. Our local club autocross charges "upgrade points" for aftermarket, oversized sway bars. I installed the '96 bar for free - it is OE stock right? KLBurgess A stock M3 understeers. In fact, almost every car understeers by design from the car makers. It is safer for inexperienced drivers to control. To reduce understeer (or increase oversteer), you need to make the rear suspension relatively stiffer compared to the front. You can do that by increasing the size of the rear sway bar. I was trying to dial out some of the understeer of my M3 with the larger '96 rear sway bar. Lowell

#7. Re: Fastest way to change front strut top hats? - from Andrew Kalman

Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2006 13:11:11 -0700 From: Andrew Kalman <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: Re: Fastest way to change front strut top hats? I ended up removing the struts entirely -- a spring compressor was required (stock springs). Some notes: 1) To use an impact / air wrench you'll need a thin-wall deep 22mm impact socket. A standard / cheap one likely won't fit. 2) You definitely don't want the shock shaft spinning when you use said impact wrench. I have found that a thin, soft-grip plier (I have a Blue Point / Snap-On one, it's soft of a water-pump plier with some polymer jaw inserts) is sufficient to immobilize the shaft without scratching it. This works both when removing the top nut (at max setting) and re-installing it (at setting 2 of 4 on my IR 450 ft-lb unit). Forgetting for a moment some of my reassembly stupidity, it's a 2-hour job (both sides). --Andrew P.S. It turns out that I was running the '96 and later top hats, reversed and rotated (so that I got around +1 degree camber and around -1 degree castor). After I had disassembled one strut I decided to stick with these hats, reverse, but not rotated. That gave me around +0.5 degrees camber and +0.8 degrees castor (all numbers approximate). After an alignment, I am now nominally at 2 degrees camber F & R, except for the FL wheel, with has an additional 0.4 degrees of camber. Dunno why (yet). > > >-------------------- 1 -------------------- >Date: Sun, 23 Jul 2006 23:40:05 -0400 >From: "aek@pumpkininc.com" <aek@pumpkininc.com> >Subject: Fastest way to change front strut top hats? > >Hi All. > >I need to change the top hats (sorry, I don't remember the right name -- >it's the plate that is at the top of the strut, held on via the strut not, >with the three studs that come up through the body and are held in place >via nuts or via a cross brace) on my LWT.
