Come on now Lowell, the original equipment Michelin MXX3 was specified for a rim as narrow as 7.5" by Michelin so it was considered acceptable. Sure, an 8" or 8.5" rim would have been better but I wouldn't necessarily say BMW "cheaped out". Recall, this was considered one of the best handling cars ever, it isn't like BMW equipped the car with high heels. :-) But you are correct, most all new tires in 235/40-17 will specify a 8.0" - 9.0" wheel width although there wouldn't be an issue running them on the BMW 7.5" wide wheels. The Yokohama Advan AD07 (which comes in a 235/40-17 or a 224/45-17) grips better, feels better, and lasts longer. It's also better in the rain. Downside is that it costs a bunch more. Sure, an 8" or 8.5" rim would have been better but I wouldn't necessarily say BMW "cheaped out". ---------------------------------------- Rich, No offense but I am going to ask you to prove that statement. I have looked at ever tire manufacturer's approved rim width fitment for the last 10 years and not one has ever approved using a 235/40-17 tire on a rim as narrow as 7.5 inches, especially not Michelin Pilot SX MXX3. I looked at Michelin's approved tire/rim specifications every couple of months after I bought my M3 in February 1996. See below for Michelin's approved rim widths for the Pilot Sport PS2 which is nearly the same tire as the Pilot SX MXX3. All of the tire manufacturers agree. All approve a rim 8.0 to 9.5 inches wide for a 235/40-17 carcass and the "measured" rim width is 8.5 inches. The approved rim widths are really an industry standard and not up to the tire manufacturers. _http://www.michelinman.com/specs/pilot_sport_ps2/2958.html_ (http://www.michelinman.com/specs/pilot_sport_ps2/2958.html) And if you don't believe me, how about Tire Rack? See the following URL. About half way down it talks about Rim Width Range. Tire Rack specifically mentions the BMW M3 235/40-17 tire fitment. _http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tirespecskey.jsp_ (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/tirespecskey.jsp) Also, when you mount a tire on a rim narrower than its measuring rim width, you reduce the overall section width. A good rule of thumb is for every 0.5 inch difference in rim width, you change the tire section width 0.2 inches. The measuring rim width for a 235/40-17 tire is 8.5 inches. Mounting it on a 7.5 inch rim which is 1.0 inch narrower, you reduce the overall section width 0.4 inches or 10 mm. It just so happens that a 225/45-17 tire is "measured" on a 7.5 inch wide rim so I will argue that a 225/45-17 tire is the same width as a 235/40-17 tire when mounted on the same 7.5 inch rim. Now, all technicalities aside, will a 235/40-17 tire fit on a 7.5 inch rim? Probably. Note the size fitment range for a 245/40-17 tire. It is identical to a 235/40-17 tire, i.e., 8.0 to 9.5 inches and measuring rim is 8.5 inches. A 245/40 tire is obviously wider than a 235/40 tire so something is off. It is probably a rounding error. Probably a 235/40 tire should be used on rims 7.75 to 9.25 inches and 245/40 tires on 8.25 to 9.75 inch rims. They got rounded off to 8.0 to 9.5. Bottom line? Personally I thought 235/40 tires on 7.5 inch rims looked "skinny" to me. I never purchased a 235/40-17 tire for my '95 M3. When the original tires wore out, I bought BMW polished forged split spoke 8.5 inch rims and Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 245/40-17 tires all around. I loved how the 245/40 tires filled out the wheel wells. I've since gone to 255/40 tires after some fender rolling and increased negative camber. Lowell Seaton '95 M3

As I was fiddling around inside with the key in the "Acc" position, the radio suddenly quit working (no sound, display blank). The failure mode indicated to me that a fuse had blown, but I checked the two fuses (under the hood - anyone know if there's one at the radio?), and they're fine. Neither Bentley nor a search of the archives provided much help. Any thoughts? TIA, KC Boyce '97 M3 Crew Cab
