You basically want an offset arm lift so you can get the doors open on the lift. We have an older rotary double post lift, before they came out with the offset version for the doors...Has two posts, and four arms that you swing under the car like you se at dealerships... They make drive on lifts but for working on a car, especially a track car, where you have to pull suspension parts/brakes. The two post lift is much nicer to work on. You can access the entire bottom of the car. There are other MFG of two post lifts that are not as expensive and work as well. One thing to check is the arm height when lowered. Our older rotary lift I have to put 2x12 wood on the floor to get the car high enough to get the arms under on most of my lowered cars... hope that helps..Once you have a nice two post lift you will never go without one! Highway, secondary roads-doesn't seem to matter where I am. The light does not come on while using the brakes, strangely enough. Car is a '95. Where should I start in narrowing down the likely source? Is there an OBD-I "stomp test" to help narrow down the culprit? TIA, Pat Kelly '95M3, with stuff pkelly@agincourtcapital.com

Seeing as the ABS system is not part of the OBD-I system, I would say no :-) Of course, if you have access to a good independent BMW mechanic, you could have them read out the fault codes from the ABS computer. Then you'd know what the faulty was. Jim Bassett - has access to *2* really good independent BMW mechanics :-)

Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:39:36 -0700 From: "Peter Loron" <peterloron@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] lifts My father installed a 2-post lift from Eagle Equipment. The lift itself is pretty nice, but he's had some major problems: - When the parts originally showed up, the main posts were not built to spec...the arms wouldn't move freely in them. He eventually got new ones sent out that fixed the problem, but it was a severe hassle with their customer service (they didn't want to reimburse him for his costs in dealing with the bad parts, it took many weeks to get the new parts, etc). - About a 18mo after the lift was installed, the motor for hydraulic pump failed. It was very hard to get their customer service to talk with him, and when he finally was able to speak with somebody they basically said "yeah, so?". No help at all. He eventually found the 3rd party that makes the pumps and motors for several of the lift manufacturers and ordered a new one directly from them. The research he did before purchasing the lift showed many folks were happy with Eagle. Apparently Eagle was bought out a while back and their quality and CS have gone in the crapper. Just one data point, of course. -Pete On 8/25/06, Gary <probikeguy@probikeusa.com> wrote: > Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:25:07 -0500 > From: "Gary" < probikeguy@probikeusa.com> > Subject: Re: [E36M3] lifts > > Rotary makes some nice lifts. The mold release hasn't even completely worn off and you can tell that the PS2s are leagues better than the SO3s ever were... Living in L.A., I have little concern about heavy rain conditions. They're also marginally cheaper ~$10-20/ea than the SO3s ever were (before the recent close-out fire sales). Like Jamie, I've been through probably three sets of SO3s, buying two at a time after the first set of four (because the rears would wear faster than the fronts by a 2:1 margin. #9. E36 ipod installation - from dgcrum@jps.net
Top
Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:46:14 -0700 (GMT-07:00) From: dgcrum@jps.net Subject: E36 ipod installation Car audio datapoint: I recently added a CD43 and DICE ipod interface to my 96 M3 using the stock amp and speakers. If you are looking for a way to keep the stock dash appearance and lighting, relative ease of use, and (to my ears) decent sound, I'd recommend this combo. I'm sure the audiophiles here will require something a bit more substantial (insert your own subwoofer joke here), but it sounds fine to me. The CD43 that I bought via craigslist has a non-functioning CD player, thus it was only $20, but who needs CD's when there's an ipod? The DICE allows control of the ipod using the CD43 buttons - it's initially a little awkward since some commands require two presses of a button, others only one, but one quickly adapts. Using the CD43 controls is nice since I don't need to look at the ipod while driving and the CD43 controls are easy to use by braille. Additional pluses are that the ipod is mounted safely out of sight in the trunk and no additional charger is needed. The wiring harness and documentation for the DICE are above average for a consumer electronic product. For 95 M3's, it probably won't work without a new CD changer harness - I'm fairly sure the audio harness of the earlier cars that used the Pioneer CD changer won't mate directly to the DICE harness. No affiliation, I'm just happy with the results and thought it may benefit other E36 folks. - David
