Just so no one makes this mistake, never work underneath a car simply supported by any jack, whether a $59 HF Chinese special, a $300 Lincoln or a $600 AC. Always make sure a car is supported properly before working on it. No car is supported properly with a hydraulic jack. Use quality jack stands. Regards, Rich

I was ordering some stuff a few years and whined about their wash mitt (that was over 1 year old) not being what I liked. They discounted my order for the amount of the mitt (didn't even want me to send it back) and sent some free stuff along with my order. I don't buy everything at Griot's, usually just something I can't find elsewhere. I understand that they support the NW area CCA chapters somewhat. No affiliation, etc. Cheers, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M3 #21 I-stock

#4. Cruise Control woes - from Scott Spangenberg

The cruise control has not worked properly since I bought the car, but it was just an annoyance to me. Now that I am selling it, I really need to get it working. I posted this problem a year ago and got several responses recommending I change the brake light switch and/or the brake displacement sensor on the brake booster. The brake light switch definitely needed replaced as I started getting a "Brake Light Circuit Failure" message this Spring. Replacing that did not fix the cruise. I then shelled out $120 for the displacement sensor kit and, unfortunately, that didn't fix it either :-( What else could be the problem? Is there a separate control box for the cruise? Here are the symptoms again: Cruise will sometimes engage, other times not at all. Once engaged, I cannot use the "Accel" or "Decel" functions. It just maintains speed until I come to a hill, then it will lose about 10 mph before suddenly "kicking in" and racing back up to the set speed. Sometimes it will just continue to lose speed until I shut it off. When using the stalk to turn the cruise off, there is a several second delay between selecting "off" and the cruise actually deactivating. This, in particular, is quite disconcerting. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have a potential buyer, and fixing this is a condition of the sale ... or at least finding out what the cost will be. Thanks! Yeah, that little black box with the mechanical cable and the electrical connector. At least make sure the electrical connector is connected tight and properly. This part goes for around $200 something, while the cruise computer (uncoded, I think you need to buy it and ask them to send it in to BMW NA to have it programmed [?]) goes for something close to $400 :(. My hope is this tool allows for replacement of the valve caps and keepers on my '95 without the need to remove the cylinder head. Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2006 23:24:42 -0400 From: "Dave Arnold" <air2daa@insightbb.com> Subject: [E36M3] Harbor Freight Racing Jack I have both the small and medium size jacks from HF and have liked both of them so far. I use the medium sized one at home and the small one at the track. The problem with both of them though is that they can be unstable when used on uneven surfaces (such as at the track, in a parking lot, on a hill, etc). I've seen some of the more expensive jacks that look like the HF ones that have "wings" attached to the front to help with the stability problem. The HF has some tapped holes in the front where it appears that these wings could be attached if you could find only those parts. The reason I mention this is that if you take the jack outside of the garage to the track, unless you rent a garage, you will be confronted with the real world of uneven surfaces using a jack that is not the most stable of designs. The result of which could be from nothing to damage to the jack or worse if you're not careful. I say this from experience as I broke my little HF jack today at Mid Ohio; one of the swivel wheels broke off. I had to jack the car on a slight incline and I guess too much pressure was placed on the one wheel. I'm not sure if the one from Griots would have held up any better but I won't know since I can't afford one of theirs anyway. So I'll be off to HF next week to replace mine and keep looking for those winged attachments. Date: Sun, 27 Aug 2006 15:09:53 -0400 From: Mark D <mdlkml@atari-source.com> Subject: Alternator Questions Hey guys, My alternator bearings went belly up this morning conveniently in my garage. Faced with the replacement I see choices for 80amp or 140amp. Which one should I get? It looks like the bosch 140 amp doesn't have the alternator duct, but mine definitely has the duct. I have a 1996 M3 with the S52. I've got a rather large stereo system and I've noticed this car has always handled it much much better than my other cars leading me to believe I've got a 140amp. I can always pull it out and look when I get home, but I'd rather get advice anyway. Thanks, Mark
